Biography:John was a farmer and a lumberman. Lumbering was the chief industry in his day.
Upon his return from the Civil War, he married Mary Walburn and reared his family, beleived to have been, in Clarion and Armstrong Counties.Laater he moved to Grampian R.D. (Hepburnia) PA.
There is much to be said about these people, They raised their own meats and grew their gardens.They canned their foods for a winters supply, cured their meats, gathered and dried teas, gathered butter, hickery, and walnuts.Knew how to store green vegetables for the winter.Filled their apple bins.Cut enoght wood for winter.Made their own clothing, Washing them on a wash board, boiling clothes to get them white.Cooking on coal and wood stoves.
Transportation by horse and buggy or wagon, mostly by food.In some areas a train was available.
They were a closley nit family.Always getting together, those who remember Grandpa and Grandma had nothing but praise for them.They were very happy loving folks, wanting people around all the time, and most of all the table of food set for every who came into their home. The good neighbor policy in those days were great, neighbor helping neighbor, always sharing, always caring.
The Guiher Homestead is where Lee Anderson lives (1982 - *).
Grandpa and Grandma's generation has passed, Their chilrens, childrens generation has passed.
Military: This is to Certify tht John C. Guiher enlisted September 1, 1861 from Clairon County PA, and was mustered in the UNITED STATES SERVICE at Kittaning, PA to serve three years as a private in COMPANY A. 103rd REGT, PA VOL. INFANTRY under CAPT. K. LANCHRAN and COLONEL T. F. SEIZMAN.THe regiment was assigned to KEYS CORPS ARMY OF THE POTOMAC and COMRADE GUIHER shared the fortunes of this regiment in all its eminent, as follows
SEIGE OF YORKTOWN, April 5 to May 2, 1862
WILLIAMSBURG, May 5, 1862
FAIR OAKS, May 31-1862
SEVEN DAY BATTLE, June 26 - July 1, 1862
MALVERN HILL, June 30, 1862.
The regiment was then transferred to BUTLERS CORPS and engaged at KINGSTON, Dec 14, 1862
LITTLE WASHINGTON, Dec 14, 1862
PLYMOTH, North Carolina whwere COMRADE GUIHER ahs his whole regiment was captured.COMRADE GUIHER was taken to ANDERSONVILLE prison April 18, 1964, and held five months, then taken to CHARLESTON, S.C. and held one month, then to FLORENCE, S.C. and held for four months after which he was parolled to ANNAPOLIS, MD from where he was HONORABLE DISCHARED by G.O.No. 77 on June 28, 1865 and the close of the war.
Re-Enlisted as a veteran Jan 1, 1864 with a member of WILSON CALDWELL FORT DEPT of PA.
Presented by COMRADE GUIHER to his wife MARY and CHILDREN WILLIAM--ALLEN--AMELIA--ESTELLA--MINNIE--MINERVA--FRANKLIN--SIMON--LAURA--CALVIN--CLEVELAND--RAYMOND--RALPH--on October 15, 1904.

Dear Sir and son, I expected a leter from you before this I suppose you tought I had ought to write , I am going to Andersonville, GA to attend the dedication of the monument that is erected in memory of the prisoners that died on trail prison.It takes place Dec 7th. I am a little short of money and I thought if I cound get the load of five or ten dols til in January i will pay to you when I get my pension in the month.Cal Ray and myself are making and putting in crops part of the time you will be apt to see John Haley he is going to poeahoutas County W. Va to buy a tract of timber.Since is here on a visit, he left his wife at home wills mary is sick and sent for mary to go down.the rest of the folks are all well as far as I know please answer this soon and let me know about the moneyI am going to start about the first of Dec and that will soon come around.Yours TrulyJohn C.
