| A great deal of this family research came from a book, "A Southern Gideon Family", by Marteal Wells, Edited by: Joe Don Stuart, Ph.D., Published in 1999 by Higginson Book Company, 148 Washington Street, Post Office Box 778, Salem, Massachusetts, 01970; www.higginsonbooks.com. This book is a genealogy of Lewis Harmon Gideon, his wife Sarah Ann McFadden and Joseph F. Gideon and his wives Matilda Davis and Lydia Hager. The relationship between these two Gideons has not been established, since they resided in the same locale and there are numerous records of business transactions between them, it can be assumed they are brothers or cousins.Lewis Harmon Gideon, his wife Sarah Ann McFadden Gideon, and Joseph F. Gideon were Texas pioneers. They arrived in the Republic of Texas on 6 December 1839. Lewis Gideon would have been 27 years of age and Sarah McFadden Gideon would have been 17 years of age. Joseph Gideon would have been about 18 or 19 years of age.In the Lewis and Joseph Gideon party were Isaac Gideon, Isaac Wise, and William D. Wise. The relaltionship between these Gideons was not determined through research. It is likely that they are related, perhaps brothers or cousins. Research indicates that the accompanying Wise men are cousins of the Gideons. The earliest mention of the Gideon Family is with the Wise Family in South Carolina....William Wise was born about 1776 in SC. He married Catherine Elizabeth Gideon, daughter of a Richard Gideon. She was born about 1775 in Laurens District South Carolina. The Wise and Gideon families were pioneer settlers in Bedford County, Tennessee. Later Willaim Wise and his brother, Henry Wise, migrated to the area of Monroe County, Mississippi before 1818. With them was Elizabeth Gideon Wise and her brothers, John and Abraham Gideon and father, old man Richard Gideon (a Revolutionary War Vet). This is the area of Mississippi where Lewis and Joseph Gideon later migrated to Texas from. | |
