Our beginings start around 1640 with a John Giffen born in Ayrshire, near Beith, south of Glascow. He fought with, or followed the Coventeers, under General Leslie. He settled in Kintyre, where the Giffen's remained there until about 1777 when the first know group left for America. Some of these Giffen's went to Virginia and then Ohio, others to Canada, while our group left in 1839 and ended up in Northern Illinios. That place is now known as Caledonia, Illinios, however it was originaly called Scotch Settlement, and then Argyle, after the the larger area that Kintyre was a part. They came on a ship called "Marion", and along with a host of other relatives bearing names of Picken, Huie, Howie, Furgeson, Mcdonald, Harvey, and others, they joined the Greenlees and Armours that were already there. Andrew Giffen and Jane Huie Giffen with their six children, toughed it out through the first winter living in the Greenlee cabin, a kindness that was shown to many a new family. Ther oldest daughter Janet was the first school teacher in the settlement and she bore the brunt of her mother's death in 1841. One of their sons Andrew also lost his first wife and then married Ann Helen Heywood one of their three chilren was Robert Lincoln Giffen. After the death of his first wife he married Lillian Monigold and moved to Texas. Their son James Robert Giffen is our grandfather. He married Berneice Elizabeth Boone and are survived by four children seventeen grandchildren and many great and great-greatgrandchildren.
