Notes for A
LLEN ROBINETT:
From: the web site "The Claude Wells Family- Incl. McMillan, Robinett, Fugate" by Claude E. Wells,
Report "Decendants Of Allen Robinett" submited by Jerry W. Robinett

Allen Robinett, who emigrated to America with William Penn's colonists,
and his many decendants. Most of the data on the early generations was
assembled and written by my late uncle, Allin P. Robinett.

The name, today, has three common spellings; Robinett, Robinette, Robnett.
Early records quite frequently spell Robinet, which is the true french spelling,
though Allen wrote his name Robinett.

The reasons given for the changes in spelling are many. from my own
experiences, my name would be spelled correctly more likely if it were
spelled Robinette rather than Robinett. One branch of the family said the
e was added to make the name look french. In another, the e was added to
differentiate one branch from another because of different persuasions or
sympathies, as in the Civil War. The e was accidentally added to a name
on a birth certificate, and rather than go through the courts to get the error
corrected, the name became Robinette. in early records, particulary the
3rd and 4th generations, the name was often spelled phonetically, Robnet,
and from that we probably have the present Robnett spelling in four major
branches of the family.

Allen Robinett was neither the first nor the only Robinett to emigrate
to America in the 17th century from england. We have records of three
members of the Robinett name who were in the Jamestown colony in Virginia
and two who were in Maryland long before Allen came 1682. However Allen
is the only one who left known decendants in America.

Allen Robinett, the emigrant colonist to Pennsylvania, was born, probably
in England about 1632; he died 5 June 1694 in Upper Providence Township,
Chester (now Delaware) County, Pennsylvania; married 29 September 1653,
at the church of Saint Mary of Aldermanbury, London, England, Margaret Symm, who apparently predeceased him, both
buried on their plantation in Upper Providence Township or in
nearby Sandy Bank
Graveyard (friends' founded 1690) on "Providence Great Road" now in the
Borough of Media, PA

From the file "Allen The Emmigrant" by Cecilia E. Brown

No data earlier than his marriage record in 1653 has been found for Allen Robinett. His small twenty-formo Bible , "Printed by John Field, Printer to the Parliament " in London, 1653 which he carried with him, on which inscribed on the fly-leaf "Allen Robanet, His Booke, 1653", and in the back other matters in an old native English handwriting indicates that he probably was native born, though possibly of French extraction. His early life and young manhood were during years of religious strife in England;
as 1653 was the year that Oliver Cromwell dissolved the Rump Parliament and began his despotic career as "Lord Protector of the Commonwealth". No record has been found definitely establishing Allen Robinett's affiliation with any particular religious organization.

Three Bibles which were apparently brought to America by Allen are in existance today. One of these Bibles, the twenty-formo, printed in 1653, is owned by James M. Robinett of Ponce Inlet, Florida.
This bible was passed down through decendants of Allen's eldest son, Allen and contains birth records of the children of Allen III, 1-1-2, of Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania and of Capt. John Robinett, 1-1-2-2-4
of Wilmington, Delaware.

Sometime after his marriage in 1653 and prior to 1666, Allen and his family moved to Bunbury, Cheshire, England. Records of the Christening of his two sons, Allen and Samuel, are found in the register of St. Boniface, the Bunbury Parish Church, for 1666, and 1669.

Allen was a 'first purchaser' from William Penn of 250 acres of unlocated land "yet unserveyed in the wilderness of Pennsylvania" while still in England. His property was laid out after his arrival in America.

Allen with his wife and two, possibly three of his children, arrived in America during the summer or early fall of 1682. He probably landed at Upland (now Chester) . By March 6th, 1683 he had moved to his 245 acre plantation, as he witnessed the will of his neighboring landholder, William Taylor, from Sutton, Cheshire, England, whose daughter Mary, Subseqently became the wife of Allen's younger son, Samuel.

Passenger records have been found of the family of William Taylor and Margaret Fincham. Although Allen's name has so far not been found on the passenger lists of ships reaching America from England
in 1682, it is speculated that he and his family may have been on board the "Friendship" from Liverpool
since it carried so many others like the Taylors, who settled in nearby Chester, PA

Allen built a water mill on Ridley Creek which he sold to Richard Crosby of Middletown Township on September 29, 1687, with bottom land on both sides of the creek.

In right of his purchase of land from William Penn the usual bonus of a lot and passel of Liberty Land was assigned to him in the newly-formed city of Philadelphia. The lot number was 192 (193 in other recordings) and was ultimately located at the northwest corner of Eighth street and Walnut street. As it was worth little in his day, it was ignored during his lifetime, but under the provisions of his will decended to his son Samuel, who, many years later, by deed of 10 Oct 1744 conveyed it to one John Bettle, Cordwainer of Philidelphia.

Allen Robinett was a man of some education at a time when inability to write even one's name was not uncommon, as evidenced by his arraignment in court of Chester County, held at Chester the 3rd day of the first week of 10th month (December) 1689 for writing sundry abusive papers against John Bristow, one of the king's Justices for tat County, characterized by other than Robinett, as 'one of the greatest rogues to come to America.'

In a list of landholders prepared in 1689 by Governor John Blackwell, the Estate of Allen Robonet was returned as 400 acres, the agregate amount of his original purchase and the 'headright' land.

All is shown in the "List of Taxables, 1693" under "The Towneship of Upper Providence" for Chester County.

Allen died 5 June 1694, the day after he executed his will. His wife, Margaret, had apparently predeceased him as she is not mentioned in the will.

His will, in the nature of a deed of gift, signed with his mark - indicating physical inability to write his name - was executed on 4th day of 4th month 1694. it reads as follows:

'Be it known unto all whom it may concern that I Allen Robenet senier due by this deede of gift to my daughter Sarah that pece of land lying between nether coote and Richard Woodworthes the line running
streight over not taking in any of the cleared ground; I allsoo at my decease give my daughter Sarah the neager boy and fethe(ers?) Coult and the Deepe chest those things I doe give and grant with the land mentioned to her and herr heirs forever. Also I doe give and grant and confirme to sun Samuell his heirs and assigns forever the remainder of the land lying next the roade with the plantation and all the cleard ground and houseing and barn with all the goods that I am possessed with when I die.

Also, I doe give to my son Allen a paire of gloves and to his wife a pair of gloves and to my son in law Robert Ward and his wife my daughter Susanna another paire of gloves also to his daughter Elizabeth a pair of gloves.

In Witness Whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal this 4th day of ye 4th mo. 1694.
