At least six separate Gilliland family groups came to Alabama in the early and mid-1800s.
1. John Gilliland (b 1797) came to Huntsville (from TN or NC?) by 1819. His descendants are found throughout north Alabama.

2. Another John Gilliland (b 1792), with wife Rebecca McBrayer, came from South Carolina. At least one son has descendants in Texas, but other sons still have descendants in Alabama.

3. Abel Gilliland came from Tennessee in the 1820s but his family moved west after he died in the late 1820s.

4. Robert S. Gilliland came to northeast Alabama in the early 1800s from Tennessee.

5. Brothers Thomas Monroe Gilliland, Hugh Gilliland and William Gilliland, Jr. came to east Alabama from Georgia about 1835. Descendants of Hugh and William are found in east and central Alabama. Thomas Monroe moved to west Alabama by 1850. His descendants are found in northwest Alabama and east Mississippi.
6. A third Gilliland family, headed by a Thomas Gilliland and at least one of his sons, Augustus Gilliland, came to Tuscaloosa Co., Ala. in the 1850s from South Carolina.

I am focusing primarily on Thomas Monroe's descendants, but I am interested in compiling information on all families. I have several lines that I and others have compiled. I will be glad to share information.
