I, Daniel Gilligan, am researching the heritage of the Gilligan family from Columbus, Ohio. I have researched back as far as my Great Great Grandfather: Nicholas Gilligan of parish Kilnalappa, Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland. My genealogy line is Nicholas Gilligan – Michael Nicholas Gilligan – George Gilligan – Charles Martin Gilligan – to my brothers and I. Charles Martin Gilligan was born the first of two in Toronto, Ohio on April 16, 1927. His sister Rosemary Gilligan was born November 13, 1929. Charles married Virginia Ann Core in Columbus Ohio. Charles has 5 sons Michael (& Liz), Patrick, Gregory, Daniel (& Lesli) & Mark (& Barbara). Mike & Liz had Shaun, Katie, Erin & Colin and now live in Plano, Texas. Mark & Barbara had Matthew. Greg writes a byline for the Richmond Va. Times Dispatch.
Rosemary Gilligan married Ray Onia. Rosemary has 3 daughters Rebecca (& Greg) Lowery, Cinthia (& Dave) Daugherty and Sandra (& David) Sigler. Rosemary now lives in Hammond, Ind. Becky had Kimberly, Melissa and Angela; she has 2 granddaughters by Kimberly: Samantha & Peyton Lowery. Sandy had Matthew and Amanda.
Their father was George Gilligan. His birth record says he was born in Jefferson County, Ohio on April 16, 1896 as George Lopeman, son of Emma Lopeman and an unnamed father. George remembered having a sister named Clair or Clara. The 1900 census has Emma & George living at the Cross Creek Township Infirmary in Jefferson County. The census shows that Emma was born in Feb. 1858 in Ohio, widowed & parents born in PA. Emma might be a sibling to Eva and Jane Lopeman who married William Moran. We don’t know anything else about Emma Lopeman.
George Gilligan’s natural father is Michael Nicholas Gilligan. Emma sent George to live with Michael Gilligan and his wife, Mary (See information below on her) when George was old enough to start school, we don’t know if he was legally adopted. Michael and Mary had one foster daughter Catherine Hoary. Catherine was the daughter of Mary Gilligan’s sister Delia Hoary. When Delia died Catherine and her father moved in with Michael and Mary. Catherine Hoary later married George Hitchcock.
Michael Gilligan’s parents were Nicholas Gilligan and Mary Connelly. Nicholas and Mary Gilligan had at least two sons and two daughters: Michael, Thomas, Nora and Mrs. William Music.
Michael Gilligan was born March 25, 1864 in Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland. He married Mary Agnes Rafferty in Ireland before emmigrating. Mary Agnes was born on June 9, 1875 in County Galway, Ireland. They emigrated from Liverpool on January 27, 1891, arrived at New York, NY on February 13, 1891 on the vessel Nevada. Michael died August 30, 1943. Mary died February 25, 1946. Mary Agnes had two sisters, Delia Hoary & Catherine Murray.
Thomas was born December 21, 1856. He married Catherine Carrigan in 1882 in America. Catherine was born in Ireland March 6, 1864. They had 10 children: John, James, Thomas, Nora, Leo, John F., Peter, Michael, Norma & Margaret. Thomas died October 12, 1927. Catherine died August 14, 1929.
Nora was born October 11, 1872 in Ireland. She married John Small and had two sons Mark and John. She died February 8, 1944. Her son Mark became a priest.
The name Mrs. William Music is stated as a sister in Michael Nicholas Gilligan's obituary. I could not find a William Music in the Ohio census.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
