Our Gillmor family has been in the Leitrim/Sligo area of Ireland since at least the early 1800s. Our family forklore is that our Gillmors emigrated from Scotland to America but that, after some time there, several brothers recrossed the Atlantic but came to western Ireland rather than Scotland. This was probably in the 1700s. My grandfather, Stuart John Gillmor, was born somewhere in America in 1851, reportedly while his mother was visiting relatives there. A brother of his, Robert Gillmor, emigrated to upstate New York in 1896. Other members of the family emigrated to North America, Britain and elsewhere. |
