John Gilliland (son of Alexander James Gilliland and Frances Baird) was born July 11, 1797 in North Carolina, and died October 12, 1856 in Bethlehem Church, Gallant, Etowah Co., AL. He married Sarah Brasier on December 30, 1819 in Huntsville, Madison County, AL.

 Includes NotesNotes for John Gilliland:
Elder John Gilliland was born in North Carolina, the exact place has not been learned of as of January 1999. The first record of his presence in Alabama is found in DeKalb County. In the year of 1818 at the age of 21, he and two brothers left North Carolina with parties of a 40 wagon mule train seeking new land in the frontier. They passed through Tennessee on their way to Alabama. One brother stayed in Cleveland, Tennessee. We do not know his name. John and B. D. Gilliland (we believe) continued on to Blount County where they obtained land and started families. That same year John obtained land about half way between Ellison's Crossroads and Hood's Crossroads ( on County Road #39) in an area named Murphy's Valley. He increased his land holdings substantially in 1822.
On December 30, 1819, at the age of 22, John married Sarah Brasier in Madison County. They would eventually have six sons and five daughters.
In 1831 John was licensed to preach by the county of Saint Clair. From this point he was to be known as Elder John H. Gilliland. It was about this time when he established his family in Greasy Cove near Clear Springs (now Gallant). This land is now covered by a man made lake. Later he purchased more land in Blount County and in Etowah County near Attalla.
Elder John Gilliland is credited with establishing several churches in Blount, DeKalb, Etowah (then called Bain), and Saint Clair Counties.
John, Sarah, and many of his children are buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church, near Gallant, Alabama.

John Gilliland was referred to as Elder John. He was a Primitive Baptist Minister. He established the Wills Creek Baptist Association around Gallant, Alabama. He also ran for public office but was defeated. He was considered a good man but very strict in his beliefs and unbending. Therefore, many were pleased he did not win election.

License Record, March 20,1820-Dec.1830,p.307. In a Special Orphan Court held in the town of Blountsville in and for Blount County on the fifteenth day of February A D 1830. To all whom it may concern. Know ye that John Gilliland (now of Blount County) this day produced to this court credentials of his ordination and of his being in regular cummunion with the Baptist Christian Society which it appears he is a member. This Testimonial is therfore to Authorise the said John Gilliland to solominize the Rites of Matrimony in said State of Alabama. (signed Mace T.P.Brindley, Register of the Orphans Court of Blount County.
John Brasher married Louisa Davis 20 April 1826 by John Gilliland, Justice of the Peace....that means there is a BOND made for John when he became JP...might tell us something and should be recorded in Orphans Court Minutes.
Brashiers in area with John and Sarah.. She just well may have been a Brasher-Brashier but I have looked at the original marriage record in Huntsville and it is BRASIER..close enough it may be Brasher..Jerry Jones, Attalla has long said, back in TN she was Brasher.

John Gilliland was born in Pendleton District SC in 1797. He came to Alabama and married Sarah Brasill(?) (some sources say Brosscals) around 1819 in the Huntsville area. (One source has a child born in 1816!!). James Alexander was born in 1820. He married Mahulda (?) Ricks. William VanBuren (also known as Doc) was born in 1838 and died in 1922. John's descendants account for many of the Gillilands in north Alabama. Another group of Gilliland's (my family) came to east-central Alabama from Georgia in the mid-1830's.

I have not totally substantiated this, but i believe that John (b1797) is the son of Alexander James Gilliland, b 1771 in North Carolina. His father, also Alexander James, was born in 1737 in Pennsylvannia. His father was James Adam Gilliland, born 1715 in Ireland. James Adam was one of several brothers who came to Pennsylvannia, probably in the early to mid 1730's.
