Notes for J
AMES MORROW:
There is much uncertainty about the life and origin of James Morrow. It has been suggested that he is one of the brothers named in the account below, however I think that is an error. I believe that he did serve at the Battle of Point Pleasant but whether he was the James Sr. or the James Jr. is not certain. His son would have been about 14 so it is possible that he went out with the men to protect their frontier settlements from the threats of Chief Cornstalk and his warriors. The other scenario is that another older but unrelated James Morrow served (possibly the one who later married Elizabeth Frame and moved to Kentucky) at Point Pleasant. The designations of Sr. and Jr. have been used to distinguish unrelated individuals bearing the same name.
This Morrow family is believed to be of Irish origin and probably arrived in America in the mid-1700's. My collaboration with Carolyn Norlyn, Helen Bacon, and Anna Roshon has yielded a theory that the family arrived in Pennsylvania as part of the wave of immigrants that would later be described as Scotch-Irish. This label isn't necessarily accurate, as these people weren't Scottish; the label allowed Americans to distinguish the early Irish arrivals in the states from their counterparts who came in the 1830's and later. This later group was the target of much hatred and discrimination so anyone of Irish descent whose family had been in the country since the 1700's had reason to make the distinction. There was a well-known Scotch-Irish settlement in Augusta County, VA. It seems likely that this Morrow family at least passed through the Augusta settlement on the road from Pennsylvania to cheap/free lands on the frontier, which would later be part of West Virginia.

From Martin Morrow of Indianapolis, IN:
James Morrow (Sr?) born in County Dowon, Ireland (1730-1797)
--In "Dunmore's War", a James Morrow Senior and James Morrow are listed on the muster rolls under "A list of Capt. Robert McClenachans Company of Volenteers from Botetourt".

Tradition has it that the origin of the name of Morrow dates back from Southern France. They immigrated from there to England where they stopped awhile but did not marry. They immigrated on from England to Scotland to northern Ireland, and married into Scot families. They immigrated from Scotland to northern Ireland, settled near the City of Belfast, in County Dowon, Ireland. the dates were not given but must hae covered many years from the time of leaving France. Until 3 Morrow brothers James, William, and Tim immigrated to the New World and landed at Jamestown, Virginia in October. They landed here preceding 1774 as James was in the Battle of Pont Pleasant then Virginia, now West Virginia. They first went to Richmond,VA after debarkation at Jamestown. They spent the winter in and around Richmond and the coming spring moved on to Winchester,VA where they planted ad harvested a crop of grain then moved on to Shepherdstown, WV where they settled.

From Johnita Malone of TN:
Will of James Morrow of Greenbrier County,WV .Devisees-Mary, wife; James, son;James Spencer, grandson; Samuel, son; Agnes Graegg, daughter; Jane Wymer, daughter. Witnesses: Thomas Beard,Samuel Beard, Robert Stephens.

James owned between 133 and 150 acres at various times in Greenbrier County, WV. The land was located on Spring Creek. A land grant dated for 1787 is listed in Sim's Index to Land Grants in West VA that lists 133 acres.
