'Gil~Gannon' Surname: ‘Gil’ or 'Kil' is the abbreviated form of ‘Giolla’ (which means Devotee/Servant) - ‘Gil’ being the earlier 17th Century English preference. With this in mind, there are two possible Irish Septs which the name may originate from: a.) ‘Mag Giolla Ghannain’ – ‘G/Kilgannon’ in English - the County Sligo family b.) ‘Mag Giolla Fhionnáin’ The old County Mayo family, ‘Mag Fhionnáin’ – ‘Gannon’ in English and ‘O Geanain’ in the spoken Irish language.
