Jacques Bernard d'Hauterive(d'Auterive)was from Aoste (a small town north of Grenoble), France. He and his wife, Marie Jeanne St. Laurent had many children, at least three of whom moved to Louisiana.
Jean Antoine Bernard was the eldest known son of Jacques Bernard. Jean Antoine, born in Aoste in 1728, was the first child to move to Louisiana. In the mid 1700's,Jean Antoine and his family settled along the Mississippi River in the Iberville Parish area of Louisiana and he died there. He was one of the first Louisianians to welcome the exiled French Acadians when they arrived from Nova Scotia and other parts of the world. Thus, some consider him to be the father of Louisiana Acadians.
At least two other of Jacques Bernard's children moved to the Louisiana territory - Josef Bernard D'Hauterive de Valliere and Claire Bernard Dubuclet D'Hauterive. Josef became Commandant of the Arkansas Post and established a family there. Claire died in St Martinville, LA.
This family tree Chart is the THIRD DRAFT. This version starts with Jacques Bernard but it concentrates on the descendants of Jacques oldest son, Jean Antione Bernard. It has been expanded over the first version to include both main branches of Jean's descendants - those that settled in Acadiana (New Iberia & St. Martinville) and those that settled in New Orleans (St. Bernard Parish).
This family tree contains many errors and omissions. Reviewers of this Chart are requested to send any known errors or omissions to Philip Gill at (410) 886-2108 or E-mail pjgill@tilmac.com.
