| Surnames: Gilpin, Taylor, Jackson I am looking for John Gilpin born in NC @1838. He fathered two sons by Margaret Jane Taylor born 9-1-1833 TN, died 9-12-1919 Boone Co. KY, Smith Gilpin born 4-17-1866,died 7-14-1894 Boone Co.KY, married 11-29-1886 Boone Co., Ky. to Annie Jackson; and William Gilpin born 12-3-1869 TN, died 4-22-1924 Boone Co., Ky, married 12-27-1893 Boone Co., KY, Lucia May Jackson, born 4-01-1870 KY, died 2-10-1953 KY, daughter of William J. Jackson and mother was unknown. The wives of Smith Gilpin and William Gilpin were sisters. I cannot locate any marriage record for Margaret Taylor and John Gilpin. I did locate Margaret and her two sons, Smith and William on the 1870 Clairborne Co., Tazewell, TN. She and the boys are living with her Mother and Father, James Taylor, Sr., b. 1808 VA and Sarah (Sallie) b. 1815 TN. Other children in the family were Nathaniel Taylor b 1836 TN, William Taylor b. 1837 TN, m Elizabeth Chadwell 2-17-1867, Eveline b. 1841 TN, Nancy b. 1842 TN, James P. b. 1845 TN m. Sarah Nevels b. 1851 VA on 4-15-1867, known ch: George, b.1867, Andrew b. 1870, John A. b. 1850 TN, Samuel b. 1853 TN, and Martha b. 1854 TN. The Gilpin boys, Smith and William were not named as Gilpin on the 1870 Claiborne Co., Tn census but appear to be considered Taylor. On this 1870 Clairborne Co., TN census there is a John Gilpin, 35,, Va. and Elizabeth 19 TN living next door to Samuel Gilpin 58, TN and Sarah 58 Va. Also on the cenus is Martha Gilpin (Nevels) and ch: Jasper,11, Garrett 9, Willie 7, Tilmon 5, and Mary 2. John Gilpin is not on this census with her and the children. I feel the John Gilpin we're researching is the son of Samuel Gilpin b.1807 and Amey b. 1805. The family is on the 1850 Surry Co., N.C. census. Known children were Armistead b. 1830, John b. 1834, Phebe, b. 1835, Martha b. 1829, Pauline b. 1843 and Elizabeth Lambert, age 23 was also on the census. Smith Gilpin appears to have left Tazewell, TN and relocated in Boone Co, Ky (Walton, KY) to marry Annie Jackson. William Gilpin followed a few years later to marry Luca May Jackson as did their Mother, Margaret Taylor. Margaret Taylor is living with William Gilpin and his wife, Lucia May Jackson and children on the 1900 Boone Co. Ky Census. Over the years I have collected alot of information about many Gilpin lines and I will share them with you. |
