Descendants of Peter R. Gilbert

Generation No. 1

1. PETER R.1 GILBERT was born 1769 in GREAT BRITAIN, and died in FREDERICK CO., M. He married ELIZABETH LARKINS August 16, 1803 in Frederick Co., Maryland, daughter of JOHN LARKINS and MARIA HIMMEL. She was born August 10, 1777 in FRED., CO., MD, and died in FRED., CO., MD.

Notes for P
ETER R. GILBERT:
LAND TRANSACTIONS: 1837 #14001 4/234-36...Peter/Elizabeth Gilbert
hd a debt to pay...lost a judgement to Nathan Nelson..would lose lands
(Middle Plantataion) if they couldn't pay $5.

Peter is mentioned in the book by Kenneth Scott (compiler) Butler Gen
Pub. Co., 1979..British Aliens in the U.S. during the War of 1812.

P. 130 (W. MD. GEN.) VOL. V. #3, JULY 1989--John Sponseller, son of J acob
Sponseller, binds himself to Mr. George Dofler, cabinet and coach mak er,
for 3 y, Sept. 21st, 1801. Wit: Peter Gilbert (315)--taken from Frede rick
Co. indentures.

Peter Gilbert is mentioned in Isaac's Stoner's "Final Account." p. 29 6.
Peter was paid 0.6.4...Feb. 1807; Account of Isaac Stoner on April 11 th,
1804...Peter Gilbert is mentioned on p. 295 (Frederick Co., Md.)

In neighboring Carroll Co. , there was a Sara , dau. of Peter Gilbert , born
May 4th, 1805. Sponsors: Balser and Susanna Gilbert.

James Hill, illegitimate child of Achsah hill, was bound to Peter Gil bert
until 21 years of age;James was 10 years old on April 30th, 1804. Pet er
was to provide schooling, weaving. This material was xeroxed from
material at the Hall of Records in Annapolis.

In a Judgement concerning Peter R. Gilbert and Nathan Nelson in Feb.,
1837 (and Sept. 27th, 1838) Peter's last name was spelled Gebhart

Peter R. Gilbert also had land transactions with Jacob Jacobs (April
20th, 1838) , Nathan Maynard (Sept. 12th, 1838), Samuel Stevenson (Ju ne
20th, 1835), Nathan Nelson (Oct., 29th, 1842).

Other Gilberts "somehow" associated with Peter R. Gilbert are Cathari ne
Gilbert and John L. Gilbert. Their names appear in documents regarding
Peter R. Gilbert / or land he held. The Rhodes family could possibl y be
associated, too. Peter's grandson was named Herman Rhodes Gilbert. A
Rhodes family did live near the Peter R. Gilbert family in Frederic k Co.,
Md. Possibly the R. in Peter R. stands for Rhodes--just a thought.

Summer of '93..visited Annapolis Hall of Records on Fri., the 6th of
August. I went through many Frederick Co., Md., records. I found Pete r R.
in the 1843 tax records: New Market District #9 from the
Commissioner's Tax Collection Ledger..May of 1843...By 32 acres of la nd
transferred to Thomas Doyle--assessment District #2 (New Market
Dist.)....Debit (real/personal $80); Credit (real$256/personal $80. T here
were no tax records in the ensuing years, leading me to my original
thoughts (via land transactions) that Peter R. died in 1843.

****Equity records for the Rhodes family for 1828...John, Peter, Dani el,
Henry,Eliza, Samuel, Mary, Hezekiah Rhodes mentioned....Catharine Rho des
married a Thomas Gilbert..Thomas Gilbert was deceased by 1828. They
had a son Thomas who was out of state. Thomas Gilbert and Catharine
(Rhodes) Gilbert had a son named Harman Rhodes Gilbert! This
information comes from a packet of Rhodes material in Annapolis.
Materials from this will be copied and sent confirming names/dates.

Summer of '94. Coming closer to "a" location within "Middle Plantatio n"
where Peter R. Gilbert might have lived. Found a survey map showing
Nathan Maynard, Nathan Nelson, the Clary family. Peter had land
transactions with these people.

The Hooper name appears. Within the household of Nathan Maynard were
two Hooper children; their relationship to Nathan Maynard was unknown.
John Gilbert of Fairfax Station, Va., established a relationship. The
mother of these two Hooper children was Catherine H. Gilbert who had
married William H. Hooper in 1845 in Frederick Co. More study of
documents is needed to create exactly what relationship Catherine has
with the Peter R. Gilbert line.

Found that the Nelson, Hobbs, and Maynard are all interrelated through
marriages.

Also, what ever happened to Thirza (Theresa), Elizabeth, and Susannah?
They were mentioned in the 1843 land transaction with Peter R. Gilbert
and the Nelsons. I can't find any of them in the 1850 census.
But.....Elizabeth is later found in the Crampton household in Petersv ille
(near where Thomas lived) and Susannah dies with the Maynard household
in (or near ) 1860/61. Thirza is found nowhere at any later date (yet ). So
where are these people in 1850? Are they in a different county, diffe rent
state?

Scharf's History of W. Maryland shows that Catherine H. Hooper (nee
Gilbert) died on Feb. 3rd, 1854, in Carroll Co., MD. 6/16/95

Information sent by John Gilbert on 10/5/95 shows that Mary Booth,
widow of Michael Booth, of Hamilton Co., Ohio, was the daughter of Pe ter
R. Gilbert and Elizabeth Larkins. She married Michael Booth in Freder ick
Co., Maryland, in 1821. The transaction had to do with selling of lan d to
Thomas Doyle of Frederick Co., Maryland. The Indenture was on April
21st, 1846

Located your man in the 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840 census records. He is consistently a neighbor of Joshua Herd/Heard and William Herd/Heard. Here is the data..

Children of P
ETER GILBERT and ELIZABETH LARKINS are:
  i.   THURZA2 GILBERT.
  Notes for THURZA GILBERT:
NO INFORMATION ON THURZA HAS SURFACED OTHER THAN IN LAND
RECORDS. PETER R. GILBERT'S LAND TRANSACTIONS REFER TO THURZA.

ii.   MARY GILBERT, m. MICHAEL BOOTH, June 23, 1821, Frederick County, Maryland.
iii.   SARAH GILBERT, b. April 18, 1805; m. NATHAN MAYNARD, January 30, 1828, Frederick Co., Md..
  Notes for SARAH GILBERT:
A PRODIGY NOTE SENT BY THOMAS RUTLEDGE OF MD SHOWS

DAU. SARA B. 18 APRIL, 1805, BAPT. 30 JUNE, 1805.--SPONS WERE GEORG
HAUBERT (GILBERT ?) AND CATH (?). SOURCE: MARYLAND GERMAN CHURCH
RECORDS -VOL. 7, P. 16.

HOWEVER, A XEROX COPY OF THIS RECORD SHOWS IT'S FROM THE
EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN CARROLL CO., MD. IT'S PROBABLY NOT
PETER R GILBERT'S DAUGHTER. IT CAN'T BE COMPLETELY DISCOUNTED,
HOWEVER.

iv.   ELIZABETH GILBERT, b. 1806, Frederick Co., Md.; d. August 31, 1875, Frederick Co., Md..
  Notes for ELIZABETH GILBERT:
APPARENTLY ELIZABETH DID NOT MARRY. NO MARRIAGE RECORD HAS BEEN
FOUND. SHE COULD BE THE ELIZABETH GILBERT WHO IS BURIED AT ST.
MARK'S CHURCHYARD IN PETERSVILLE, FREDERICK CO., MD. THE TOMBSTONE
LISTS HER DEATH AS AUG. 31ST, 1875.

John Gilbert suggests that there was no child of Peter R.'s and
Elizabeth's named Elizabeth. The "Elizabeth" mentioned in the deed was
probably the wife of Thomas Gilbert, not the daughter of Peter and
Elizabeth.

  v.   SUSAN GILBERT, b. 1807, Frederick Co., Md.; d. Abt. 1860; m. ENOS M. COVELL, August 21, 1847.
  Notes for SUSAN GILBERT:
"A" Susan Gilbert d. 21 Aug., 1852...she married Enos Cover..who marr ied
for his second wife, Caroline Boblets.....

The "Susan" who I believe to be the daughter of Peter R....Miss Susan
Gilbert 1860/61..in the 54th year of her age--home of Nathan Maynard.

The Susan who married Enos Cover may have been related to a Virginia
Gilbert who married William Cover in April, 1852.

John Gilbert of Fairfax Station, Va., is interested in the Susan
Gilbert/Cover family.

Susan Gilbert to Jonas Mathews on Sept. 5th, 1842, and Jan. 23rd, 184 3.
Susan owed $58.50 /couldn't pay so gave household goods...a sale. Wou ld
this indicate that both of her parents had passed away in the 1842-43
time frame? Check reel #14008 (liber 18 /17 and 23). Who is Jonas
Mathews?
