Some records indicate this family to be of Norman origin dating back to the "Blois family" who arrived in England during the conquest of 1066.

Coat of arms back to John Blisse of Buckinghamshire, England, whose name is recorded in the "hundred Roll" of 1272--- another HJohn Bliss is listed in the records of Cambridge County, England.

The earliest settlers in the New World bering this family name were George and Thomas Blisse who came from England in 1635 and settled in Rhode Island.

Desendents of this family now spell their name Bliss, and can be foun through out our nation in the world of business, as well as the arts and professions.

The story is that Grampa Bliss befriended an Indian boy and his sister. These two he called Riley and Ellen(?) Bliss. Eddie Bliss gave me this letter to copy. I have tried to spell the workd as he did, then give the correct spelling in ( ).

I will now Drup (drop) you e (a) faw (few) lines to let you know that wa (we) ell (all) wall (well) et (at) prasant (present) i will tell___ had Jory Hubbert last Sundie et (at) our matting (meeting) and i told him that you was going to have basket matting (meeting) up thare (there) and i told him thet (that) you sant (sent) for him to come and ha (he) wold com (come) up and som (some) Indian girls -- and ican not tell you whare (where) he got his mal (mail) but ha (he) got mal (mail) hare (here) -- that is ell (all).

RILEY BLISS

I wonder if there is an Indian desendant of the above Riley Bliss? He might be found on the Indian Rolls at Miami, Okla. Since he must have lived in the Seneca region. Evidently he mu;st have been a convert of "our mission minded ancestor".
