Notes for James Stephens: William Thaddeous Stevens spelled his name "Stevens" but famil spelling in prior generations was "Stephens". Henry Clay Stephens and Eleanore lived on the Stephens family farm in Londonderry township, OH where their children were born. Henry may have been the first to change the spelling of the surname when he enlisted in the Civil War whre he fought at Chickamauga, TN and in the battle of Missionary Ridge. As a soldier, he drank tainted water and became ill as many soldiers did. His wife traveled to be with him upon hearing of his impending death, and unbeknownst to her, Henry was traveling nothr simultaneously, and they pased one another. He died at home before Eleanore returned from the south. His grave is #20, row 19 in McCoys Cemetary in guernsey County, OH next to his wife. Henry served with Company H, 185th Regiment of Guernsey County from February 9, 1865 until he was discharged.
