The Descendants of David Southerland and Thomas Josselyn

Updated October 4, 2001

***
In the census of 1698, David and Mary Southerland were at North Castle, Westchester Co., NY . David is thought to be the progenitor of the Orange County family. Later this line of Southerlands moved to Ontario Co., NY and later to Washtenaw Co, MI. About that time the name changed to Sutherland. Langford and his wife Lydia (McMichael) Sutherland were pioneer settlers in Washtenaw Co. Son Nelson Sutherland assisted his father on the farm, later purchsing a tract in his native twp. bordering the road between Ypsilanti and Saline. He later became deputy sheriff and street commissioner until his death.

Nelson's daughter Ada Arminda m. Louis Parker Jocelyn well-known "professor" at Ann Arbor High School and one of the founders of the U of Michigan Alumni Association. Louis Jocelyn's father, Edmund Jocelyn , became a building contractor, erecting churches and business buildings in many cities in Ma, NY and MI. While in MA he was a candidate for the State Legislature.

I am looking for more information on Margaret Elizabeth Parker, 3rd wife of Edmund Jocelyn (married abt. 1861 in N. Adams, MA); she was b. London, Eng. 10 Sept. 1838; d. Detroit, MI 2 Sept 1910. With her parents she emigrated to USA; her parents soon died and she was adopted by the Taylors. In 1853 (Christmas Eve)she was rescued on ship San Francisco heading from NY to San Francisco. John Greenleaf immortalized the rescue in his poem "The Three Bells", which was one of the rescue vessels. Her father and many others were lost at sea.
