With bare feet I sat on the front porch of my Kentucky home listening to the excitement of my wife Carolyn as she chatted away on the phone. She’d had a breakthrough. For some time she’d been researching her family tree and I was always dumbfounded how the search seemed to consume her.I sipped my coffee, listened to the wrens, bluebirds and cicada’s and thought, “I can’t imagine getting that involved with that kind of project!”Days passed, the garden grew and flowers bloomed until one particularly hot day I stopped and took notice.Sitting right in front of me, rooted deeply in the soil on each side of our walkway were two beautiful Maple trees; One, a Sugar Maple, the other a Silver Maple. My mind wandered as it often does, back to the time when each tree was just a small sapling. At that time they were ‘miles’ apart.A small caterpillar would take an hour trying to walk from one tree trunk to the other. As the years progressed the Maple trees grew; up and out.The limbs branched, and branched again; seeds fell and others grew until each tree began their career as ‘shade trees’.On this day, the sun was hot.But as I looked up, the trees, once so far apart are now joined together way up above the roof of the house. Two different trees…from different places… just like My Dad’s family, The Glodfelters and my Mom’s family, the Hamptons. | |
