Descendants of William Prichard

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 PRICHARD was born 1740 in Wales, and died in Virginia. He married DORCAS GLOVER, daughter of COL. JOHN GLOVER. She was born May 15, 1779, and died May 15, 1839.

Notes for W
ILLIAM PRICHARD:
Tradition says that William Prichard was born in Wales, where he was kidnapped (The story told by family is that James and his brother were attending a boy's school near the coast of Wales when a Dutch trading vessel anchored off the coast and the traders came ashore. The boys ran to meet them and to ask all about the ship. The men promised them that when they returned they would take them aboard ship so they could see for themselved what is was like. However, the group of boys didn't realize that they were being kidnapped until after the ship had set sail for America, without allowing them to return to shore.) and brought to Virginia, landing at or near Norfolk, when about 14 years of age, in company with his brother John who was a few years his senior; and that upon their landing in Virginia the boys were apprenticed to Virginia planters by the captian of the Dutch trader ship upon which they had been carried away from their native land.
William Prichard emigrated from Russell County, Virginia, to Greenup County, Kentucky, in the year 1811. The records in the office of the clerk of county court of Russell County show that, in the year 1800, he purchased a tract of land there which he sold in 1810. In 1805, at the November Court, (Book No. 3, page 469 of the first records of Russell County) the following order was entered: "Ordered that William Pritchett and William James Sen'r be exempted from paying county levies and poor rates on account of their age and bodily infirmities." From this it may be assumed that William Prichard was then about 75 years of age. If then there is any truth in the tradition aforesaid he must have landed in Virginia sometime between 1740 and 1750, perhaps about 1744.
