Daddy and Mommy have gone to war
Amy Blackston is the only child of Gloria and Hobert Lolley, of Savannah, Ga. Right now Blackston is in the desert, fine tuning her profession and adjusting her crosshairs to deal with the worst case possible scenario – chemical and biological warfare.
For security reasons, her exact location, designation, and work procedures cannot be disclosed. But if there is a danger of smallpox, anthrax, or a host of other nervous system degenerators, Blackston will be there to lessen the terror.
It isn’t easy for the Lolleys, who once called Florida home, to think about their only daughter crawling “out there in the desert,” especially at night. But it is also difficult to know that Blackston’s husband, Stuart, has also been summoned to the Gulf.
The Blackstons left behind their two children, 4-year-old Alex and 2-year-old Colton, both of whom are now with the Lolleys.
“We talked about this a lot,” Gloria said. “Before Amy and Stuart left, we discussed this, analyzed this, dissected it back and forth. Amy and Stuart know that they are doing the right thing. They are protecting their children from the likes of Saddam Hussein. They are protecting us all.”
But this valor doesn’t come easy. Gloria, who works in the postoffice and the Y.M.C.A., and Hobert, a retired postal worker and ex-military man, are frightened and worried. “What if?” is an inevitable thought that pops in their minds. But after they said goodbye to the Blackstons, the Lolleys had to think about the children. Daddy and Mommy had gone to war.
The Lolleys have a prayer chain in Savannah, so someone is constantly praying for Amy and Stuart. At their home, the Lolleys have installed a television set in every room. And the news is on, constantly. When Gloria and Hobert go to the Trinity Church they pray that God will bring their daughter and son-in-law home.
Although they miss their only daughter and Stuart, Gloria believes in the course the United States is taking. But there should always be prayers of peace. “If only everyone prayed for peace, and all the people in the world learned to get along. That would be a great world.”
