Notes for A
NDREW EGAN:
According to an Article in the Tuam Herald 1919, The Late Andrew Egan is responsbile in the main for most of the larger buildings in Tuam, the Townhall, the schools , The Railway station, Eastland Row (which was demolished in the 1950's), the gasworks, the asylum in Castlebar . His nephew Mr Thomas Egan of Old Road, Tuam took over the business on his death.

John Egan was a solicitor and on the Poor Law Board. I think Patrick was his brother, also well known on various boards etc in Tuam, Patrick had a son John who died from consumption circa 1837/38(Tuam Herald). Either could be Andrew's father. Both are mentioned in Pigots directory of 1824 - John as a Magistrate living in Vicar Street , Patrick as a Solicitor, there was also a Miles and James Egan who were landowners and on the Corporation . Miles was a very large landowner of land around Tuam as mentioned in O'Donovans Ordnance Survey. Any of these could have been Andrew's father. Only John is mentioned in Slaters of 1846 as 'Gentry', thereafter he no longer appears in any later Slaters Directories.

Andrew is mentioned in Slaters of 1846 and 1856 as Architect and Surveyor, Bishop Street. Andrew is not mentioned in Slaters of 1870 or 1894 (altough his nephew Thomas A Egan is as a Town Commissioner, Thomas A Egan took over the business from Andrew(Tuam Herald article 1919)).

In Griffiths Valuation 1856, Andrew lived in Bishop Street, he owned some of the property (lot 56) and rented further property next door (lot 57) from the Bishop of Tuam (house, offices, yards and garden).

Andrew died on 19 October 1863. (Obituary in the Connaught Patriot 24th October 1863 - in this it stated that he had been ill for 13 days, and that he was 53 years of age. It also states that he left a wife and a large family. The obituary extols his virtues as a builder of much that is fine in Tuam, and that he was timely. He was liked by Protestant and Catholic alike, and states that he was buried in the Church Yard in the middle of the abbey ruins. There is also an obituary in the Tuam Herald of 24 October, but this does not add any further information.
