ILLIAM JOHN QUIDER:
William John was a ship captain.

William John owned a significant amount of land in Dunnville, Ontario. A majority of his land was dense forest. William would cut down trees and sell the lumber, first to a company in Dunnville which was building a dam for the town, The Grand River Navigation Company. After the dam was complete, he would ship his lumber to different ports, including Buffalo, NY.

William also worked as a tailor.

In 1861, William Jr. lived on land other than that of his father. He lived on 42 acres. He cultivated 30 of those acres and the value of the farm was said to be 25 hundred dollars. The owner of the property (that William Quider, Jr. once owned) revealed that he found foundation remnants to a small old house on his property. Based on old family records, it is thought that this was the house where William once built his ships. William farmed on his land and also built boats along the river. His boat house was located in an orchard on his property. Old peach trees (which no longer produce fruit) still exist on the property. The Quider family cemetery is also located on this property.

The following is a list of the ships William is known to have built while in Dunnville:

1.      1859            Belle Brandon,             schooner
2.      1862            Samuel Amsden,             schooner
3.      1862            S. Andrew,            schooner
4.      1863            Enterprise,            barge
5.      1872            Georgiana,            tug
6.      1873            Elizabeth,            schooner (rebuild)

William John died at 68 years old.
