| I am currently researching the William Gollan family of Inverness, Scotland who emigrated to Australia departing Scotland on board the "Asia" in September 1838 arriving in Port Jackson (Sydney), Australia on May 10, 1839. William Gollan was born in Inveness Scotland around 1791 and married Jannett McBernett in Scotland in 1829. William's parents are listed as William Gollan, a farmer in Inverness, and Mother Mary McDonald. Jannet's parents were James McBennett (father) and Maggy MacIntosh (mother) When William and Jannett left Scotland in 1838, they had 5 children, Mary (10yrs), William (8yrs), James (7 yrs), John (5yrs), Charles(19mths) and Janet (6 months). Charles died during the voyage to Australia. After arriving in Australia they settled into the Shoalhaven District of NSW where Elizabeth, Jessy, George, Robert and Isabella were born between 1840 and 1853. Jannett (Janet) died in Sydney in 1869 aged 60yrs. Willam died in Woodburn in 1883 aged 92 yrs. Around 1860 The male children, William, James, John, George and Robert travelled by costal Steamer to Iluka on the north coast and trekked to what was first named Rocky Mouth, on the Richmond River. The town they established is now called Woodburn. Any information regarding their Scottish ancestors would be appreciated. I am willing to share information I have collected to date. This information however is post 1840 after the family had arrived in Australia. |
