Descendants of Joseph Goodman

Generation No. 2

2. OBEDIAH2 GOODMAN (JOSEPH1) was born 1770 in Newman's Ridge, TN, and died Abt. 1836 in Hawkins Co. TN.. He married ALETHA "ALLY" JENDO RICHARDSON 1807 in TN.. She was born 1790 in TN., and died 1870 in Floyd Co. KY..

Notes for O
BEDIAH GOODMAN:
Researchers in "Descendants of Earliest Goodman" gives Ed and Obediah's mother as a Cherokee/Shawnee woman. Shawnee were all over KY but they were enemies of the Cherokee. This could explain why he lived in a Melugeon community of mixed bloods instead of with the tribe.

Name
Goodman, Obedah 100 acres and one poll.
Goodman, Jurdan
Goodman, ---

The following children sold land that they heir in, as heirs of Obedah Goodman.

6-26-1839 Enoch Goodman of Floyd Co. KY., Hawkins Co. TN. Deed Book 17:28-29
6-29-1839 Priscilla Goodman, Polly Goodman, Elizabeth Goodman, Hawkins Co.TN.
Deed Book 7:45-46 to Joseph Goodman or Joseph Jones of Hawkins Co. TN., $200.00, land north wide of Clinch Mountain in Hawkins Co. formerly belonging to Obediah Goodman. Witnessed by Pleasant Goodman, E.S. Goodman and proved on the oaths of Pleasant Goodman and Edward Goodman.
3-25-1840 Priscilla, Polly, Elizabeth, Enoch Goodman, Hawkins Co. TN. Deed Book
17:59-60 to Peter Lawson, 25 Feb 1840, registered 6 March 1840, they of Floyd Co. KY., a claim on Land descended from their "ancestor" Obediah Goodman, formerly of Hawkins County. Witnessed by Joseph Goodman and William Mosely.

With these deeds we assume that Obedah Goodman had died before or during the year 1839. Now, if Elizabeth and Bitsy are the same person then it appears that they are a Goodman and not a Sizemore. If Polly and Mary "Poly" are the same person then it appears she is a Goodman and not a Sizemore. Priscilla is either a daughter, or a child of a child, of Obediah Goodman, but a heir none the less. Priscilla could be another name of one of the girls.

In the marriage bond of Enoch Goodman, son of Obediah and Aletha Richardson, Obediah gives permission for Enoch to marry Susannah Hale. The bond states that Obediah had no lawful father. What compounds the problem is the fact that folks who lived in Melungeon communities tended to use either the mother's maiden name or the father's surname without seeming to have any reason for choosing either one.

Notes for A
LETHA "ALLY" JENDO RICHARDSON:
Richison/Richardson: Aletha "Ally" Jendo Richardson/Goodman probably is Haliwa-Saponia and melungeon. She is also known as Jendo and is said to have been nearly 6 feet tall and have walked with a very upright stance. She is thought to have Indian and Mulengeon mixture.

The Haliwa-Saponi Indians live in Halifax and Warren Counties of North Carolina, with the majority residing in a community known as the Meadows, first established in the late 1700s. Records indicate that the Haliwa-Saponi are descended from the Saponi, Tuscarora and Nansemond Peoples.

The term Melungeon was originally used for a group
of people living on Newman's Ridge and vicinity, near Sneedville in Hancock County,
Tennessee, and their descendants. These are people described
as having features like white people but being somewhat darker,
sometimes with a gray cast to their skin. They have been there for a
long time, some say they were there before the whites started arriving.

This group originated from mixed race groups along the
northern border of North Carolina and neighboring areas of Virginia.
These groups were remnants of the Saponi Siouan Indians but were
no longer pure Indian racially. They may have absorbed survivors of
several white groups.
