The Layt family is made up of a mixture of English, Irish, and Scottish heritages. We have artists, politicians, a soldier who died at Gallipolle, Salvation Army Majors, criminals who were transported over in the first fleet & the 1830's for stealing coal, clothing and food. At least one centurian who has a letter from the Queen, gold miners, stone and marble masons, carpenters and builders, some farmers, Scottish shepards, German Vine Dressers, jockeys and horse trainers, plus many many more make up this motley crew. The actual Layt name has had a few spelling changes over the years as well. It originally began as "Lait" then changed to "Layte" then finally to what it is today - "Layt". It has taken my immediate family years to find any link to our heritage as both my great grandparents on my grandfathers side, died when my grandfather was very young. Because of their deaths both his siblings and himself were placed in an orphange, this bought about the missing link to our heritage. Recently I met one of my cousins and his wife had been doing some searching and had some info for us to go on. I have reseached various sites and found a few links. My grandfather was Leslie Fredrick Layt born 31 January 1889, His parents were Fredrick William Layt (Born 11 September 1848), & Emily Nolan Butler (Born 1863). There is also a link to Gladys Warden (Born 1907)as she is my grandmother, her parents are Joseph Warden married Emma Baker (Born 1873) in 1895 at Maitland NSW. Emma Baker's parents were William Baker and Janet Meiklejohn (Born 1837).I have no information on Joseph Warden and would appreciate it if anyone is looking for this link or if anyone else is researching the names Layt, Warden, Baker, Butler, Mieklejohn and Everingham families I would appreciate getting in touch with you. My e-mail address is [email protected] Take care all of you!
