Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON SHULTES:
Most of the information on GW Shultes' ancestors collected by Joan Thom comes from his memoirs, which he wrote when he was 92 years old. He admits that 250 pages of family papers were destroyed in a fire at his home in Grass Valley, Nevada Valley, California, in 1862. He relied on memory, which he said was excellant, having read the papers many times. The following are excerpts from a letter to James Oswin Shultes, 1903, sent from San Francisco:

"Our family, on our father's side, was of pure Saxon blodd. My mother of English Descent. Our family landed in New Amsterdam, NY in 1656 (1666), David (from whom we are descended) Barent and William. Previous to coming to America the head of the house was the Mayor of the City of Dresden, Saxony, by appointment of the King of Saxony, under the title of Schulteis (hence the origin, no doubt, of the name). This office was held in the family for over 100 years, during the 15th century, and the family were obliged, through the persecution following the Lutheran conversion, to flee to Holland. The three Shultes settled in New York and vicinity. One of their descendents, David Shultes, (my grandfather) settled in Esopus (now Kingston) in about 1760. They raised a large family, five sons, Philip, Barent, David, George and William and five daughters. When my father was 13 years of age, his parents died, (both on the same day) caused by an overdose of opium administered by Dr. Krouse. Opium was little known in medicine at that time."

possible relation - Gotthelf Heinrich Schulz, mayor of Dresden, Germany who died Feb. 26, 1821, at 56 yrs. There is correspondence to back up this information. GW Shultes contends that his family for some 200 years were Mayor of Dresden, appointment from the King.
