Descendants of Johann Christian Bachman, (Christian Baughman I)

Generation No. 1

1. JOHANN CHRISTIAN1 BACHMAN, (CHRISTIAN BAUGHMAN I) was born 1755 in Baden-Baden, Germany, and died 1802 in Menellen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He married ELIZABETH SCHNEBELE in Germany. She was born 1762 in Germany, and died February 10, 1861.

Notes for J
OHANN CHRISTIAN BACHMAN, (CHRISTIAN BAUGHMAN I):
The emigration date of 1791, is a date given by grandsons. We don't have any proof that this is the correct year of emigration.

(Brief Historical Sketch: prepared by Jesse Meals Baughman, Sr., youngest son.)
Christian Baughman I, a native of Germany, emigrated to the United States in 1791, bringing his family with him. He spent the remaining days of his live in Adams County, Pennsylvania. Tradition says that he was buried in the cemetery at Gettysburg, but that during the civil war battle the tombstone was shattered by a cannon ball. We know that there were two sons in the family, Christian and Jacob, and several daughters who were mentioned in a letter written by their mother Elizabeth, in 1830. There seems to have been at least six children. Christian and Jacob the sons and Mary who married John Gilbert, Nancy who married Gabriel Meals, one daughter not named who married a Frenchman, and a fourh daughter not named. The two sons migrated west to Ohio. The rest of the family were probably in or near Adams County, Pennsylvania in 1830. It is evident that the family was well educated German people, and spoke High German, for this letter, is written in excellent German. She was then old and feeble and nearly blind but still retained a strong and confident faith in God.
One of the descendants of Jacob Baughman, living in Philo, Ohio, discovered the letter already mentioned, which was addressed to Jacob and Christian. It was preserved by Lewis Baughman of Coshocton, Ohio, and a translation is given herewith.

November 7, 1830
Menellen Township
Adams County, Pennsylvania

To: Christian and Jacob Baughman

My dearly beloved and precious children. I will write you that I received your letter of August 10. I see that you were all well, which makes me glad. We hope that Rachel, Jacob's wife, is well again. I will let you know, that we, thanks to god, are all well, and I hope, that this my letter will find you the same. More than this though I hope to hear that you are sound in faith, and that you may be strong in good works, by the grace of God. May you by his help, and through the power of his good spirit, be built on foundation; whose Lord and masterbuilder is Jesus Christ; built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets.
I see you would like for me to come to see you, but since I am old and feeble and do not see well, you may know that can not be. But, you are all strong and young and can come to me if you wish to see me.
I will serve God as long as I can; when I can be of no more service to God and my fellowmen, and it is God's will, I am ready to lay down my life; it will not be long that I will have to live here. Then it will not happen to me as to old Mrs. Cunz, who lived with Mrs. Jacob Bittner, her daughter. She lived too long for them and they gave her something to make her sleep. She slept three days and three nights and did not awake in this world any more and they committed her to the earth. That is enough, and too much for a daughter to do.
I want to let you know, that Mrs. Jacob Buschi was here. They are all well; she came from Peter Reidner, her brother, they are all well, as are all your sisters, as long as God wills. They would like to see you and wonder what keeps you from coming, as many who live farther than you, come to see their friends. I hope that it may be possible soon that you can come to see me and your relatives. This is all I know to write this time except that I want to commit you and your wives and children to the protecting care of the Almighty. May He prepare and strengthen you here in time of grace and that we may see each other in Eternal Life, and may we be able to glorify God with all the chosen in Eternal Glory. May God grant this to you and us for the sake of his beloved son Jesus Christ.
I wish that you would soon answer. With hearty greetings from us all to Christian Bachman and Jacob Bachman from your mother.

Elizabeth Bachman

Records of David Baughman, son of Christian II, indicate that there were seven children. A third son named John Bachman, born in 1787, may have died as a youth and not came to America.
