The Goodwin Family of King's WaldenUpdated September 29, 2008 | JohnGoodwin [email protected] |
This home page relates to the ancestors - and many of their descendants - of the owner of this page, and at the time of upload contains about 4,131 individuals less those believed to be still living. I have been trying to trace the eight main lines as far as possible, but on most am stuck at the transition point from GRO records to Parish records. The GOODWINS and TALBOTS were non-conformist, and this confounded my researches for over two years; perhaps the BAILEYs and HUGGINSs were non-conformist as well.Whilst "marking time" to continue the tree backwards, I performed much research to find all the descendants of my four sets of great grand parents; this is not yet complete, but Goodwin and Weller parts are almost finished. The eight principal lines being researched are GOODWIN, BAILEY, TALBOT, HUGGINS, WELLER, HALSEY, TOOTH (DAVIS), and FULLFORD - being the family names of my great-grandparents - in the nineteenth century to date, principally in London/Middlesex and Essex - but also prior to this wherever that may lead.GOODWIN has led to LAWRENCE END, KING'S WALDEN, HERTFORDSHIRE from at least 1664 to 1841 (SEE FAMILY TREE OF HENRY GOODWIN). The inclusion of the 'TOOTH' surname here requires some explanation. My great grand father Henry Charles Davis appears to have been illegitimate, with the name of 'TOOTH' handed down orally as his father's name.I am in touch with a genealogist from one part of the TOOTH family, but we have so far not identified a connection. There are six further family names extensively included, namely GILBERT, DURRANT, HENDERSON, LEMMEX, MURPHY, and BASSANO.These relate to families of spouses of some siblings of direct line individuals, because they have been researched by cousins. The DURRANTS recorded here were originally researched by Betty Durrant, with the process being continued by her daughter Margaret.I have added significantly to the detail of this data with IGI details and some GRO data, and added such lateral individuals as I happened upon but have not otherwise researched the line.Prior to relocating to London, the family extends back into the seventeenth century at Buxhall, Suffolk, but a discontinuity exists where the data recorded here leaves off. The basics of the GILBERT tree were researched by Kenneth Gilbert in connection with the administration of the estate of a relation that died intestate.I have added much GRO data to the named individuals, and added some ancestors and many of the children etc.The GILBERTS inter-married with both the Wellers and Davis's, and three 'adoptions' tie them closer than the 'natural' linkages. The BASSANOs are included here with the assistance of Gaye Strand from New Zealand; I began details of this line in the anticipation of receiving data from Peter Bassano who claimed to have the tree back to Venezzia in 1550 for his adopted surname;I have yet to receive data directly from him, but Gaye has now added this - herself a BASSANO descendant. (Peter is technically a GOODWIN, but adopted his grandmother's family name after failing to progress his GOODWIN researches some twenty years ago.) The BASSANOs were musicians imported from Venice by Henry VIII for his court orchestra; Peter was a Professor at the Royal College of Music, and a prominent musician and conductor, with details of himself on other web sites. As a musician, he claims that using an 'Italian' name assisted his career. The HENDERSON data belongs to my cousin Deborah, and relates to the Canadian descendants of her ancestor from Yorkshire, that married into the Weller family, and includes related MURPHY and LEMMEX data.Deborah and her husband Ronald have also added some information about three Davises that emigrated to Canada, and have been attempting to obtain further information on these and one WELLER that also emigrated to the same area. Some of Deborah's historical data was acquired from a distant relation (George Moon); h |
