No death Certificate At Jeff Co
Enlisted in Conf Army (Prattville Dragoons) Co H 3rd Ala Calvary in about May 1861 and discharged Jan 15th 1862. For equipment he has one horse - $225, and Equipment worth $17.50. His Capt was Jessie Cox . Was probably discharged due to sickness as there was a lot in the Camp in Pensacola, Fla.
Joined Co B 59th Reg (59th Ala Inf.) as a Private near Montgomery at Robinson Springs in March 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was paroled at Appomatox on Apr 9, 1865. This unit fought in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Richmond and the trenches at Petersburg, Va.
Reported to have had a wife before Mary Moon who died during war of measles. This cannot be confirmed.
Came home from war "skin and bones".
Had to wrap feet in toesacks during marching in the snow at Cumberland Gap.

Civil War Days
(1861-1865)
1. On May 5th, 1861, Hiram W. Brown joined the Confederate Army. He signed with the 7th Alabama Regiment in Pensacola, Fla. and became part of the Prattville Dragoons. A company of our best young men-"The Prattville Dragoons"-responded cheerfully to the call, "To arms," and went with the first troops.
They were given uniforms made of black broadcloth which was trimmed with gold braid. No other company in the State had a uniform so handsome.
His Unit experienced sickness and death while in camp and many were discharged due to their illnesses.
Hiram was 6 foot 2 inches tall, had gray eyes, dark hair and was fair-complexioned. He was discharged from this Unit on January 15, 1862 apparently due to ill health.
2. On March 16th, 1862, he joined Company E of 2nd Battalion of Hilliard's Legion at Robinson Springs. He was in Camp Mary from March - June 1862.
3. July 11th 1862 - Transportation was applied for in order to go to Chattanooga, by way of Atlanta. The Unit was 1200 strong but had no rifles.
4. August 10, 1862 - Legion to move from Knoxville to Cumberland Gap.
5. November 20th, 1862- At Cumberland Gap under General E. Kirby Smith.
Gracie's Brigade.
6. November 25, 1863 - Hilliard's Legion, 2nd Battalion became Company B, 59th Alabama Inf.
7. December 27th, 1862 - Under General E. Kirby Smith, Gracie, Col. Bolling Hall, 2nd Battalion.
8. February 20th, 1863 - General E. Kirby Smith, Gracie , still at Cumberland Gap.
9. June 19th, 1863- Gracie's Brigade left Cumberland Gap for Knoxville by rail to
Tullahoma to re-enforce Bragg. They marched to Bridgeport and by rail back to Knoxville.
10. September 19th, 1863- Battle of Chickamauga. Buckners Corps., Preston's Division, Gracie's Brigade. Hiram Brown was wounded at this battle. The battle flag of the 59th Alabama was hit by 83 rifle balls.
11. November 29th, 1863 - Skirmish at Fort Loudon.
12. December 14, 1863 - Battle at Bean's Station. In Hiram's unit there were 24 killed and 128 wounded.
13. January 17th, 1864 - Battle of Dandridge. Then Hiram moved toward Seiverville, Tenn.
14. April 1864 - Fought in the area of Richmond, Va. against Gen. Sheridan.
15. May 12 - 16, 1864 - Proctor's Creek (also called Drewry's Bluff). This was a very bloody battle with heavy losses.
16. June 1864 - In the trenches of Petersburg, Va.
17. February 5-7, 1865 - Battle of Hatcher's Run. Report of Union Gen. Chamberlain...the 59th Alabama made advance with vigor and boldness, though not in heavy force.
18. March 31, 1865 - Battle of White Oak Road
19. April 2, 1865 - Evacuation of Petersburg by Lee.
20. April 8-9, 1865 - Attached to Gordon's Corp. This was the last battle of the Army of Virginia and the 59th was in this battle. Lee surrendered to Grant April 9, 1865 and Hiram was listed among the parolees at Appomatox, Va.
