OHN CALVIN CASSADY:
The first documented existence of John Calvin is the 1850 Federal Census for Coffee County, Alabama. He is listed as Calvin "Castor" and is living in the household of Alexander and Mahala Heath. Mahala is his sister and her age is 19. Calvin' s age is 23. Near by are his brothers Zacharian (22) and Washington (20) living in the household of Joseph and Mary Gipson, their aunt and uncle. Their mother is listed as Rachael "Castor", and is living next to Joseph Gipson, believed to be her brother. In the 1860 census, John Calvin is married, has three children, and is still living in Coffee County. His brother, Washington, is living near by. Washington is also married and has three children.

Calvin was drafted into the Confederate army on 2 July 1864. He was 39 years old, had five children of his own, and was raising his wife's younger sister, Harriet (Harriets parents, Terry Prestwood and Gilley Shiver had died of small pox in August of 1863). Calvin was a private in Company H, 4th Alabama Infantry. Five weeks later (7 August 1864), he deserted while on picket duty at Deep Bottom, Virginia. The description of him was: height 5' 6", age 39, grey eyes, grey hair, and dark comp lexion. He was captured by the North on 9 August 1864. On August 10th, he was turned over to Lt. Shelley and sent to prison at Nashville, Tennessee.

After the war, he returned to Coffee County, but in the 1870 census, he and brother Washington, were living on adjacent farms in Covington County, Alabama. By 1878, Calvin and family had moved to Mt. Willing, Lowndes County, Alabama. Calvin is buried in Temple Gate Cemetery at Mt. Willing.
