APOLEON BONAPARTE CHESSER:
Napolean's personal description varies on the several forms filed in supportof his pension from Mar. 1865, until his death on 6 Dec, 1914.He is listed in the pension records as 5 feet 1 inch tall, 5 feet 2 inches tall, and 5 feet 5 inches tall . He was not as short as the family rumors (4 foot 11 inches), but nonetheless, a short man.His friends called him "Little Nappie". He consistently listed his occupation as "farmer".Family story about him is as follows:

When Napolean was a teenager he became part of the Confederate Army. His job was getting salt out of the waters of BlackWater Bay, on the Gulf.He was captured by the Union forces and put in jail.To get out of jail, he agreed to be an Union Army me ss cook. It was understood that he would not be a regular soldier. Confederate soldiers, captured by the Union, were put into service in non-combat tasks, sent out West to fight the Indians, or jailed as prisoners of war. Those going into the Unio n Army were called "Galvanized Yankees".
Napoleon was badly scalded, while cooking, and certified as disabled. He was honorably discharged from the Union Army on the 12th day of May, 1865, at the US General Hospital, Barrancas, Florida. When discharged, he went home to Lowndes County , AL. Years later, a big brown envelope showed up for him at the local post office. It was from the United States Government. As a Union soldier, he was to receive a monthly pension of $11 for the rest of his life. In later years, he was called "G randdad Pole" by his grandchildren.
