VETERAN OF TWO WARS
AND A RANGER IN TEXAS, PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 94 --- FOUGHT IN CREEK WAR
Henderson B. Alverson, father of James S. Alverson of Woodford, one of our most prominent farmers and stockmen of Carter County, died at his home in New Ark, Texas, yesterday.Mr. Alverson was fortunate enough to outlive his allotted time by many years.
He was left an orphan at an early age and was apprenticed to a hat maker in Alabama.His task-master was a hard one and at the breaking out of the Creek war, he ran away and joined the volunteers who saw service in the everglades of Florida and the then wilderness of southern Alabama. He was among the very few veterans of that war.
Soon after the close of the Creek War, he moved to Texas, where he has lived, with the exception of a year and a half, since.That time was spent with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Alverson, of this county, to whom he was very devoted.
Mr. Alverson saw service as a Texas Ranger in the frontier days, and also served in the Confederate army from the beginning to the close of hostilities between the states.
He was a man of good business judgement and ability and leaves a handsome estate that will go to his children.
The funeral will take place at New Ark, Texas, today.Mr. Alverson was 94 years of age.
