Charles Martel, who defeated the Mohammedans at Tours in 732, was the Mayor of the Palace of the western Frankish King. The King's chief minister, who was called the Mayor of the Palace, got almost all the power into his hands and really ruled in the place of the king. There was an East and West Roman Empire and usually ruled by two or more Emperors at once. Sometimes the eastern (E) and western (W) portions of the empire were ruled by separate emperors. At other times, as many as four emperors ruled the empire. Charles "Martel", is buried at the Monastery, St. Denis, Seine, France. The following is a list of Charles Martel's spouses: 1.
