1. ? ?1 EWART He married (((.

Notes for
? ? EWART:
From Kaaren Goldizen:
From the "Belfast Transcripts, Genealogical Tables of the Ewarts of Northern Ireland, 1716 - 1929". The Ewart family was settled in Northumberland near the border in the thirteenth century. Two hundred years later they were in the Dumfries and Kukina (?) brigadiers. A member of these branches crossed to County Down in the seventeenth century, and from him are descended the Ewarts of Northern Ireland. This was probably was Thomas Youart who, in conjunction with John Walker, was in 1716 granted twenty acres of land in Carmeagh(?), County Down. (This genealogical table does not show our Hannah, Thomas, Ralph, Francis and Robert and their known descendants, rather it shows two families who remained in Northern Ireland through 1929. Therefore, while the relationship is unknown, our Ewarts may be descended from this Thomas Youart or at least followed a similar path from England to Northern Ireland. Carol King Heckman's book, "Chronicles of the Ewarts", has a reference to the 'Youart' spelling.)

From Jim Ewart, jewart@exchange.ml.com, October 2000: "Our name can be found all over from Yorkshire in Northern England as far north as Aberdeen. The name is predominantly found along the border region. The family were border traders when they were behaving themselves, and border raiders when the current rulers disagreed with the family's current goal. The Irish branch of the family got there two ways: 1) caught naughty hence deported, 2) when William of Orange to subjugate the Catholics led by James, a good many Ewarts went for the promise of land, if they fought well and won. The Ewarts, not being highlander had use for highland mores and sense of superiority. The family name is of ancient origin and dates back to late 900's. They are believed to have been of Boerician origin. The name predates the highland clans by hundreds of years. "Also from Brian Ewart (GenForum): "Boerician came from Bernicia, which at one point extended from Edinburgh to York, at its greatest time. It was joined with Northumbria in England, under Boerician King Ethelfrid who sent Northumbria's Edgar packing for Merica (The Venerable Bede's Eclesiatical History of England). Eventually, one of the pre Norman kings of England gave Bernicia to the King of Scotland when they were on good terms (possibly the same king who gave Scottish royals a palace at where Scotland Yard is now). Soon after, the Scottish kings moved to Edinburgh, and the rest is history. Also, the borders are or were divided into three "marches"; the Ewarts came from the eastern march. Bernicia is pretty much the part of Scotland to the south of Edinburgh and to the eastern half of the island."

  Notes for HANNAH EWART:
It is unknown when Hannah came to America from Northern Ireland. Some sources say she came about 1776 with brothers, Thomas, Ralph and Robert. Also, there is some indication Hannah may have married Newberry Wilson in Ireland and than emigrated to America with him and eventually settled in Belmont County. (Could be Belmont Co., Ohio)
