James Calvin Jones Gordon was my 3rd cousin twice removed. He was the son of David Marion Gordon and Elizabeth J. Jones. James was born January 06, 1845 in Giles Co., Tennessee and died February 23, 1932 in Athens, Limestone Co., Alabama. He married Mary Elizabeth Meals January 08, 1867. Yet another photo from my wonderful cousin, Linda Kay "Arnold" Peper. This is Edwin Wallace Arnold (twin of Edgar Willis) and his second wife, Amanda J. McWilliams. He is the son of Thomas Newton Arnold and Maranda Woods, grandson of John Arnold and Rachel Gordon, great grandson of Samuel Gordon and Rachel Herron and Granduncle to Linda Kay. He was born in Morgan Co., IL in 1856 and died in Montgomery Co., IL in 1919. Wallace Arnold was a well-known auctioneer in Illinois. His first wife was Edna Summer who died in 1881. Daughter of Major Francis Gordon and Elizabeth Wells (Betsy) Caperton. Alabama was born May 06, 1842 in Lowndes County, Alabama and got her name by being the first child to be born to her parents in the state of Alabama (she also had a sister named Tennessee). This photo was taken of her at a young age, possibly when she was in her twenties. She married Hugh William "Will" Caffey October 25, 1865 in Lowndes County, Alabama and died October 06, 1921 in Verbena, Alabama. She and Will had five children. - Sophia Meyers (15 KB)
This is a photo of my great grandmother, Sophia Meyers, born February 11, 1883 in Creston, Union Co., Iowa and died April 19, 1980 in Gardena, California. She was the daughter of Henry Meyers and Flora Kanable. She married my great grandfather, Lawrence Calvin Mapes, July 30, 1901 in Rockport, Missouri. Her eldest daughter, Gertrude Ethel Mapes, married my grandfather, Joseph Antone Theisen. Thus making the Meyers-Mapes-Theisen connection. He was the only grandson of Edwin Wallace Arnold, great grandson of Thomas Newton Arnold and Melvina Woods, great great grandson of John Arnold and Rachel Gordon and great great great grandson of Samuel Gordon and Rachel Herron. He was born June 10, 1899 in Waggoner, Montgomery Co, Illinois, and died December 02, 1961 in Washington D.C.He is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington Co., Virginia. I consider myself quite privileged to have been given a copy of this photo. It's another of Virginia Emmie Gordon, my 3rd cousin once removed, daughter of George Edwards Gordon and Mary Hadin Robinson. The uniqueness of this particular photo was that it wasn't on any type of paper. The photo had been placed on metal, that appeared to be tin, but the face containing the photo appeared to be almost ceramic in nature. She was born May 01, 1897 and I estimate her age to be from 5-7 years old. Making the photo an early turn of the century. Clarence and Pearl were married in 1906 and lived in Macoupin Co., IL. Clarence was born in 1884 and died in 1953, the son of David Lewis Moomaw and Jeanetta Arnold. He was the grandson of Thomas Newton Arnold and Miranda Woods, great grandson of John Arnold and Rachel Gordon and great great grandson of Samuel Gordon and Rachel Herron. Harold Arnold Moomaw was born in IL in 1907 and died in Texas in 1978. Other children of Clarence and Pearl "Flory" Moomaw were Helen Louise "Moomaw" Collins and Myrtle Lucille "Moomaw" Goss who died in 1997. This is Linda Kay "Arnold" Peper's grandfather, Edgar Willis Arnold, 1856-1932, and her grandmother, Ellen (Ella) Ann Ferguson, daughter of Dennis K. Ferguson and Mary Dutton. Ellen was born in 1863 in Salem, Virginia and moved with her family, after the death of her father, to Sangamon Co., IL. She married Edgar in 1886 in Virden, Macoupin Co., IL. The twins, born in Morgan Co., IL and called Willis and Wallace, were sons of Thomas Newton Arnold and Maranda Woods, grandsons of John Arnold and Rachel Gordon and great grandsons of Samuel Gordon and Rachel Herron. Sons of Willis and Ellen were George Edwin Arnold, 1887-1962 (father of Linda Kay "Arnold" Peper) on the left and on the right is Edgar Andrew Arnold, 1890-1968. They were also parents of Johnny Homer and Edith Ethel who died as children and May Melvina Arnold, born in 1895 and died in 1918. Mom was born April 15, 1924, the oldest child of Joseph Antone Theisen and Gertrude Ethel Mapes. She married my father, Fred Henry Gordon, October 18, 1942 in Denver Colorado where she was born. She was married in 1878 to David Lewis Moomaw. The boy with his hand on his mother's shoulder is their adopted son, Fred E. "Sterling" Moomaw 1870-1909. He married Maude Drury and was the father of Verna Jeanette and Pearl Moomaw. In front of Fred is Nettie and Lewis' son, Clarence Cleveland Moomaw, 1884-1953 who married Pearl Flory in 1906. they were the parents of Harold Arnold, Helen Louise and Myrle Lucille Moomaw. Thomas was married in 1849 to Maranda Melvina Woods, daughter of Sterling C Woods and Elizabeth Clayton, whose families came from Kentucky. Their children who survived childhood were George Marion, Edgar Willis, Edwin Wallace, Jeanetta Tinsey and Libbie Jane Arnold. Thomas Arnold died in 1890 in Macoupin Co., IL at the age of 61. Both he and his wife Sallie are buried in the Pioneers Rest Cemetery, Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. H.N. enlisted in April 1861 in "Pass Guard", a 90 day militia and reinlisted in July 1861 Sabine Pass( Likens Co.). He was a First Sergeant of Captain O.M. Marshe's Company " A " Spraights Regt. Texas Vol. Infantry (Dismntd Calvalry) and was discharged May 24, 1865 Beaumont, Texas.Sallie's Obituary:CONNER. Mrs. Sallie A. Conner, widow of H. N. Conner, died Friday at a local hospital. Services will be held Monday at the residence of her son, Emmett R. Conner, 1222 South Henderson, with burial in Pioneers Rest. Let me introduce a young lady whose family I've been trying to find further information on for quite sometime. After spending a couple of fun and fact filled days with two of her daughters, have been able to not only establish some data but also acquire this photo. Her great grandfather, Samuel Gordon III, and my great-great grandfather, Andrew Gordon, were brothers. Her great grandmother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Gilliland, her grandparents were James Kennedy Gordon and Tabitha Hearne Edwards, and her parents were George Edwards Gordon and Mary Hadin Robinson. Virginia was born May 01, 1897 in Hayneville, Lowndes Co., Alabama. She died July 06, 1969 in San Jacinto Co., Texas and is buried next to her husband, John Pleasant "Plez" Dabney,in Camilla Cemetery, San Jacinto Co., Texas. Lela was Linda Kay's 1st cousin once removed, daughter of Edgar Wallace Arnold and Edna A. Summer and granddaughter of John Arnold and Rachel Gordon. She was born near Waverly, Morgan Co., IL in 1879. She was also the great granddaughter of Samuel Gordon and Rachel Herron. Lela and George were the parents of Elbert Wallace Arnold Taylor.
