CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION I am researching the origins of my paternal Fifth-Great GF, possibly John, Gordon of York County, Massachusetts Bay Colony (later York County, Province of Maine). His widow, Elizabeth _______, was residing in York in 1744 with Her two sons, Nathaniel (who was of age) and Robert. I am descended from Robert. He married Lydia Bragdon, daughter of Samuel Bragdon of York in Jan 1747/48; after Robert's probable death at sea, she married Charles Trafton of York in 1756. No record of Robert's death has been found (a/o Dec 2006). Robert and Lydia had two sons, John and Nathaniel. Their son Nathaniel was evidently adopted by Charles Trafton. There is no indication of what happened to John as a child; although probably he, too, was taken into the Trafton household, there is no record of this. John moved to Sullivan, Hancock County, Maine as a young man after the Revolution. For the complete story and other lines, see my Book "Descendants of Robert Gordon of York, York County, Massachusetts Bay Colony (later York County, Maine)" here in the Reports section. (to be uploaded later) I am also researching the origins of my maternal 4th-Great Grandfather John Quinn. John was born in Glebe, County Armagh, Ireland about 1803. He married Mary Williamson, probably of Glebe, probably in Glebe in early 1839. They had a son, Edward, in Dec 1839. John, probably alone, emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada probably in the Spring 1840. Mary probably followed in the Summer of 1844 as their next child, Susanna, was born in May 1845 in Montreal. They resided on St. Urbain St., Ste Laurent (St. Lawrence) Ward near Notre Dame de Montreal church. All the children were baptized at Notre Dame. Mary died in the Summer of 1883 and was buried out of Notre Dame. Their son Edward married Anne Carpenter, probably in Spring 1866. Anne was born inDrogheda, Armagh, Ireland Their first child, John, was born in Montreal in Jan 1867. Edward, Mary and John emigrated to the US probably late in 1870. Edward and Mary's second son, my grandfather Edward Francis Quinn, was born in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts in Sep 1871. For further details and related lines, see my Book "Anne Tyler Quinn Gordon, Her Family and Ancestors" here in the Report Section. Goals: A. Gordons 1) Origin of Elizabeth Gordon's husband. 2) Place and time of Robert Gordon's birth and death. 3) Business relationship, if any, of Robert Gordon and Samuel Bragdon. 4) Location of John Gordon, son of Robert, after Lydia Bragdon Gordon married Charles Trafton. B. Quinns 1) Any 18th or early 19th century information of residents of Glebe, Armagh, Ireland. 2) Records of the marriage of John Quinn and Mary Williamson in Glebe, Armagh. 3) Passenger list of John Quinn's emigration in 1840 (I have axerox copy of a British Colonial Office file of 1840. It appears to be a record of his arrival in Canada). 4) Passenger list of Mary Williamson Quinn's emigration in 1844. I have another Canadian document "Abstract of Teaming(?) performed by William Orr on the Emigrant Account between the 15th of May and 31st of October 1844." This shows a "Mary Quinn & 3 Children" who arrived with two carts of baggage and were bound for Guelph which was 38 miles away. 5) Emigration/Immigration/Passenger List for Edward, Ann and John Quinn from Canada to the US. His naturalization papers state that he arrived in the US at New York City (i.e. Castle Grande). | |
