As the sands of time run out on another year I greet you with hope, that the peace which passes all understanding, will bring new life and hope to you all, and the families of our troubled world. Albert G. 31/12/2008 17.10hours

Welcome to our Family Home Page there are links to sites of organisations of which I am a member that have helped me in my research, which may provide you with more information that could be of assistance to you. Other links take you to sites concerning my home town of Grays Thurrock, Essex, England UK.

If you can help me with my on-going quest I shall be pleased to hear from you. If you think I can assist you in anyway I will endeavour too, within the limitations of my knowledge and ability.

These are the principal family surnames involved in my research: GOSNALL, BUTTELL, CARTER, DINES, GILMOUR, GRANTHAM, HEMPSTEAD, KNIGHT, NEWTON, MERCER, MOTYER, OSBORN, PACKHAM, TUTTON, WILSON, WINSOR, and WINTER along with many more who have married into the families.

Geographically my roots are in the town of Grays Thurrock, Essex to which my fathers GOSNALL family brought him as a young boy c1885.

My paternal great grandparents are from North Essex, and were born I believe in Colchester and Lawford. My g.g. grandfather John Gosnall, a carpenter, was possibly married in Colchester but may have been born across the border in Suffolk. My great grandparents and their son had moved into the Dockland area of London's East End by 30 March 1851 and were found at 6, Princes Street, Tower Hamlets, St.George East, Middlesex.

The mother of my father and her SWEENY family came from Limerick, Ireland around the time of the potato famines of the 1840's and also settled in the East End of London.

In checking the 1851, 1861,1871,1881,1891 and 1901 UK Census at Ancestry.com I have discovered that my Grand-father and Great-grandfather were married twice. Grandfather William had three possible four children by his first wife.

My second Grand-mother Margaret had other children that died in infancy, so I have learnt that they had a very hard life.

My mothers BUTTELL family moved into Grays from South Ockendon, Essex. From the detailed information in the 1851 census it is possible that John Buttle my g.g. grandfather is the brother of Joseph Buttle who has his father James b.1782 at Stifford the next village dwelling with him at South Ockendon.

Mother's maternal CARTER family came to Grays from Canvey Island, Essex further down the banks of the River Thames.

My wife's NEWTON family are from Swinderby, Lincolnshire. Her Great-grandfather Charles NEWTON is married to Mary who may be Damaris CURTIS. Their son's, moved South to London also at some point in the mid 1800's. In 1881 they were running a drapery business in the Westminster area.

The Family Tree of Charles NEWTON, can we believe, be traced back to branches that include Sir Isaac NEWTON 1642-1727

The Steve Pavitt pages about my home town of Grays Thurrock are well worth spending some time on, especially if you wish to know how your town or village can be represented on the world wide web.

Sylvia & Albert Gosnall are proud to announce that their Grand-daughter Laura Ashley Gilmour is engaged to marry Adam Smith of the Wirral.
