Generation No. 1

1. JOHN3 IRVINE ((UNKNOWN - JAMES?)2, (UNKNOW)1) was born Abt. 1730 in Scotland, and died February 11, 1796 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He married (1) [WIDOW] MORRISON. He married (2) ANNIE WELCH September 17, 1771 in Northumberland County. She was born Bef. 1752, and died 1780. He married (3) MARY ANN FULLERTON.

Notes for J
OHN IRVINE:
John Irvine was born in Scotland and educated in Ireland. He emigrated to this country with his parents and settled near Milton, PA., where he owned a farm. During the Revolutionary War, anticipating the move of the British and Indians, he loaded his goods into canoes and passed down the Susquehanna River into Cumberland Co., PA with his family for safety. While there, on February 11, 1796, he died, the family moving back to their old home after the troubles were over. John Irvine was three times married, having children by each wife, twenty-two in all. Three of his sons, Andrew, George and Welch, came to Bradford County. His third wife was Mary (Mollie?) Fullerton and there is a tradition in the family that one of his wives was a Widow Morrison. Four of his sons were:

      1. George, born Abt 1775 and Married Margeret Reed
      2. Welch, born Abt June 15, 1780 and Married Mary Margeret Kester
      3. Andrew, born May 28, 1789 and Married Catherine McAgee
      4. Guy Carlton, who served in the war of 1812

In his will he names the following children:

John, George, Samuel, Elizabeth, Ann, Welch, Andrew, Alexander, Gavin, Carlton and Roseanna. James was the first son named as executor so it is assumed he was by the first wife. George was full brother to Welch and possibly Samuel was also. These three were executors of their father's will. John, Elizabeth, and Ann received only five shillings so we can assume he had already given them their share at marriage. Because the first son was called James we might have the name of the immigrant ancestor.

(Note that of John's three wives, Mary Fullerton was his wife at the time of his death.)

Following is the text of the Last Will and Testament of John Irvine:

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Irwin of the County (formerly) of Northumblerland, Yeoman, being very sick and weak in body; but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, Calling unto mind the Mortality of my Body, and knowing that it is appointed for all Men once to die, I make and ordain this my last Will and Testament; That is to say, principally and first of all, I give and recommend my Soul into the hand of Almight God that gave it, and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be Buried in Decent Christian Burial, at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but at the General Resurrecton, I shall receive the Same Again by the mighty power of God.

And as touching such Worldly Estate Wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form: First, I allow Mary, my Beloved wife, to be Maintained out of my Estate until such times as said Estate shall be sold at the discretion of the Executors, and then I give, and bequeath unto said Mary, my wife, one hundred pounds of the State of Pennsylvania, to be levied out of my Estate, together with a young Bay Colt, now about nine months old, also one Cow to be her Choice, one Bed with the Bedclothes thereof, A Bake kettle, wheel, Reel, and a new Saddle. Also I give to my Son, John Irwin, and to my daughters Elizabeth and Ann, each five shillings.

Also, I give to my sons James Irwin, George Irwin, and Samuel Irwin, whom I constitute, make, and ordain the Sole Executors of this my last will and Testament: With Welch Irwin, Andrew Irwin, Alexandria Irwin, and Gavin Carlton Irwin with my Daughter Rosanna Irwin, the remainder of my Estate, and movable Effects, by them freely to be possessed, and enjoyed. Each of them share and share alike. And I do hereby ratify and confirm this, and no other to be my last will and Testament: In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal, this eighth day of February in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety six. - John Irwin & Seal

Signed, Sealed, published and Declared by the Said John Irwin as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us, who in his Presence, and in the presence of each other have hereunto subcribed our names. - Robert Lewis, William McClean & Thomas Hilands
