According to a reference in the Jacksonville Genealogical Society 1990 publication Robert and brother Cornelious came to Florida between 1820 and 1840. Cornelious in the 1820's and Robert in 1830's. They were sons of Robert West, Sr. of Horry County SC mentioned in his Will dated 1826.
The 1860 Duval County FL Census shows household ages that range from 67 to 3.John, age 5 and Robert, age 3 may be grandchildren of Robert West, Jr. although the 1860 Census does not record relationships of individuals.

Vol. 2, PP 38-39, Muster Roll of Captain R. D. Bradley's Company of the 13th Regiment, First Brigade of Florida Mounted Militia Volunteers Ordered into service of the United States by Gov. R. K. Call from the 11th day of February 1837 to the 11th day of ----1838 (for a period of 12 months).
On 13 February 1837 at San Pedro, Capt. R. D. Bradley certified that this muster roll was a true, accurate and just. D. H. Vinton also certified that he had on the 13th of February 1838 mustered and minutely inspected the above named Company of Florida Militia-------Robert West is listed as 3rd Corpl.
