I have been researching my family history intermittently for several years, now I am retired I hope to spend more time on the project. The earliest direct descendant I have unearthed is my Great Great Great Grandfather William Gough born 1808 & his wife Jane Gough (nee Brown) born 1813, she was 2 years old when Wellington defeated Bonaparte at Waterloo, makes you think doesn't it? I have a lot of disparate information about my ancestors but what I really need to do is organise it in such a way as to give me a better understanding of the way they lived their lives, although it becomes progressively more difficult the further you go back, information becomes harder to verify, state records give way to less ordered methods of finding your descendants. Sometimes it is tempting to make assumptions based on scant evidence because the alternative is that your investigation grinds to a halt. The photo of mygrandfather Walter Gough is a case in point,he wears a WWI uniform and the family likeness is uncanny, but at best the evidence is apocryphal nevertheless my brother & I have decided to accept him as one of our own.Alan Gough i
