Jacob's parents were among the first settlers in Appling County, Georgia. It was there that he grew up and lived until soon after the Civil War. Between 1867 and 1880 Jacob moved to Brooks County and became a pioneer Sawmill operator. He was Postmaster at Dixie in 1869 - 1876. Dixie was then Called Grooverville, He was Whig Candidate for State Senator in 1845 but was elected defeating. James G. Conner (Democrat) of Montgomery County, Georgia.
