Descendants of Thomas Blanchard

Generation No. 2

2. SAMUEL2 BLANCHARD (THOMAS1) was born 8 06 1629 in Goodworth Clatford/Hampshire, England18, and died 4 22 1707 in Andover/Essex, MA19. He married (1) MARY SWEETSER 1 03 1654/55 in Charlestown/Middlesex, MA20, daughter of SETH SWEETZER and BETHIA COOKE. He married (2) HANNAH DAGGETT 6 23 1673 in Charlestown/Middlesex, MA21, daughter of THOMAS DAGGETT.

Notes for S
AMUEL BLANCHARD:
Samuel and Mary lived in Charlestown on his father’s farm. He was involved in the disputes with John Guppy. Later he built a separate house on the same property and his eldest son, Joshua, was left on the homestead and received it as his legacy. Samuel served as Constable in Charlestown in 1657.

Mary and Samuel’s children were not baptized as infants. Mary's brother, Benjamin Sweetser, took a brave stance for religious freedom by following his convictions about the Baptist faith. A letter from Thomas Osburne to George Little, 1682, lists Mrs. Sweetser as involved, with her son Benjamin, in the formation of the Baptist Church in New England. It would appear that Samuel and Mary followed the Baptist belief about infant baptism.

One “William Godden, ... was perhaps a roving trader who exchanged sugar and tobacco for Beaver pelts and other merchantable productions of the country.” He wrote a will in which he left fifteen pounds to Mary and the balance of his estate for the education of poor children in Charlestown and Malden. This may have been the first public funding of education in New England; however there is no record of the expenditure of the funds. Samuel was to choose another person and the two be made executors. In March 1665/6, William Godden was found drowned and soon after Samuel, having proved the will as executor, brought a suit against Ralph Shepard for the sixteen pounds debt to Godden’s estate in 1652. (Corey, History of Malden, 600, 601.)

Mary died February 20, 1669/70 in Charlestown. (George D. B. Blanchard, “Blanchard Family,” 373.)

In 1687 Samuel and second wife Hannah bought property from Henry Jaques in Andover and settled there. Samuel was active in town affairs. In 1690 he was a signer to a petition against the careless licensing to sell strong drink. He served as Constable in 1694 and Selectman. He is called a husbandman.

Samuel died in Andover in 1707, near 80. An account of his funeral expense is given in History of Andover, MA, by Abiel Abbot (1829): 184. Samuel’s burial stone is white granite which was imported from England. It is the oldest dated stone in the burial ground and predates the ground’s establishment. The borders are an interesting design which has been analyzed, and the results are on file at the Andover Historical Society.

Notes for H
ANNAH DAGGETT:
From Charlotte H Abbott's, "Historical Andover" column in the Andover
Townsman, Jan 27, 1899;
"The second son Jonathan came to Andover with the father a youth of 16. His own mother died when he was ten, and Hannah Daggett from Marshfield or Noddles Island had taken her place with the half brothers, 3Thomas born in 1674, 3John in 1677, 3Samuel in 1680 probably the last one in Charlestown and a baby sister Hanna in 1681 perhaps born in Andover who married the neighbor's son, Stephen Osgood at 18.
      "Here these boys grow up, putting in good strokes on forest and highway, and when Samuel was ready to divide his small reserve, 3John had settled down in Billerica where his father was a large owner with a Crosby wife, whose children persisted in crossing over on our side and marring Abbott, Phelps
and other eligible bachelors greatly to the confusion of the records. The
records of Billerica and Tewksbury must be well studied to get the whole story..."

Taxed in 1688 for farm on Wilson's Point "& his Fathers living" (NEHGR, Vol 34, pg 274.)

From Charlotte H Abbott's, "Historical Andover" column in the Andover
Townsman, Jan 27, 1899;
"The eldest son 3Joshua was left upon
the homestead there and received it as his legacy when Samuel died in
Andover in 1710, near 80."

In Correy's History of Malden we find on pg 209; "There is no indication of pew-rights being granted to others until after the alteration of the house, when [November 5, 1703,]...The next year...At the same time, it was 'voted yt Joshua blanchard shall haue liberty to Remoue ye south doore to ye west side of ye post yt jt shuts Against: upon his one charg and yt ye said Joshua blanchard and his wife shall haue ye Romme to beuld a pew whare ye dore now hangs And after ther death or Remoues ty there pew shall Return to ye town Again.' To each of these votes was added, 'ye alley to be left 3 foots wide.'...

pg 214; "A general town meeting was held, July 6, 1703, for the special and only purpose of considering the question of the location of the pulpit. It had been agreed with the Charlestown neighbors that it should stand on the west side of the house; but the record of ths meeting relates that 'Considering the jnconuences and damig; accuring to tye puopitt on yt side: by Reson of ye extrem heate: at sum time of ye yeere: Therfor haue voted and ordered that The pulpitt shall be placed on ye north-east side of ye meting hous.' The alterations now proceeded apace; and in February, 1703/4, Joshua Blanchard was paid thirty-eight pounds and one shilling in full for 'Timbar: shingls: clobards and Glaze.' (The Blanchards lived on Wilson's Point, or Blanchard's side, now Wellington, in Medford, which was then a portion of Charlestown.)"

pg 480; "Mr Emerson was married, December 27, 1721, to Mary Moody,...The young couple occupied the 'ministry house,' which had been the home of Wigglesworth, and gathered around them the little substance which they possessed. It had been put in 'Good Repaire" by the workmanship of Joshua Blanchard the housewright and Jabez Sargeant the joiner, at the charge of the town. The following quaint receipt is entered upon the town record:-
      'These may jnform whom jt may consarn That ye parsonage hous which       doe now dwell jn: jn malden: And also ye fences That are aboute the       arsonag land: Are sett jn Good Repaire Acording as This Town did             promis me: when J did setle here jn ye work of ye ministry -- And J doe       Resaiue Them so: As wittnes my hand This: 8 of march 1722-3                                    Joseph Emerson."

pg 563; The church has formed a south precinct and there is much evidence from the records that they were a very poor group. The minister, The Rev Mr. Joseph Stimpson was disabled and not able to serve full time. Much uneasiness and dispute came of the situation until in 1741 Seth Sweetser of Charlestown and Joshua Blanchard of Boston were able to effect a settlement.

Charlestown VR lists Mary Blanchard b to Josh. and Eliza. Blanchard, b. Dec. 18, 1713.
