THE HISTORY OF THE GOWING FAMILY has long been a topic of conversation and interest amongst its rapidly expanding members. Little was known about our ancestors beyond our parents' parents, until recently, when a cousin in Australia revealed the strong possibility of Germanic blood. It must be said that this was viewed with mild scepticism (not to say dismay). It did however, stir the interest, and now there are a fair few stones being turned, and this page could play a major part in that process. I hope to be in the position to make REGULAR updates, fingers crossed!
Most of the family are currently living in Hertfordshire, having moved out from Eastern London in the early 1900's. Contact can be made with the author of this page (Colin Gowing) at the address shown, any 'Relative' information would be much appreciated!

This picture is of George Carsten Hollings, taken in 1927 with his Daughter Sarah Ethel Gowing (nee Hollings) and her son of seven years Donald Jack Gowing (my father). The location is Exeter Road Walthamstow. George spent most of his adult life in Walthamstow at many different addresses staying only a short time at each one. In accordance with tradition he was named "George" after his father and "Carsten" after his grandfather. Carsten was born in Hanover, Lower Saxony and came to England in the late 1700's with his father.
