| My grandfather, John Gowlett was born on 25 July 1870 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, UK and emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1889 initially settling in the London, Ontario area. John GOWLETT married Eleanor GOBLES in 1892 and had two children, Mary Louisa born 1894 and Frederick born 1896. They lived in London Township and Eleanor died on 10 January 1898. John married again on 20 December 1899 to Isabelle PRUICE and the family moved to Sandfield on the Manitoulin Island to farm a 100 acre parcel of land [ Lot 8 Conc. 4 ]. They had two children, Elizabeth Isabelle born 1902 and Hazel Ireene born April 1904 and died in Aug 1904. His wife Isabelle PRUICE died in September 1904 at the age of 25 and both her and their daughter Hazel Ireene are buried in the Big Lake cemetery just west of Sandfield. There are no markers. John married for the third time to Emily Agnes KERR and they had five children, Alfred 1907, Alice 1908, Walter 1910, Robert 1914 and Harvey 1916 who drowned in the Manitou river in 1919 and is also buried in the Big Lake cemetery. There is a small stone marker. John sold the farm in 1923 to Ray Arnold who's family still own the property and retired to Little Current, Ontario and died in 1941, one year after his wife. Note: I would like to hear from anyone who knows anything of the first two families of John Gowlett or anyone who has any knowledge of the family in general that they wish to share. I do have fairly extensive coverage of the family in England but I am interested in obtaining more detailed coverage of the family after arriving in Canada. |
