James Lewis, a settler of Vermillion County, and an active and public-spirited citizen, was born in Carter County, TN May 23, 1835. His father was a native of Ashe County, NC. James was reared to the avocation of farming, which he had followed the greater part of his life. In his boyhood he attended the common and subscription schools of his neighborhood, completing his education at Taylorsville Academey, of Johnson County, TN. He then taught school some ten or twelve years. In 1863, he went north, and enlisted in defense of the Union as State Guard, stopping first at Mecca Mills in Parke County, Indiana, and in the fall of the same year he came to Vermillion County. He went to his home in Tennessee in August of 1865 and in the spring of 1866 returned to Parke County. In the spring of 1867 he came to Vermillion County, and made his home in Helt Township. He owned 68 acres of good farm land. He was deputy assessor of Helt Township for 2 years, and served as township assessor, having been elected for a second term in April, 1886. Both he and his wife were were members of the Baptist church. They had 8 children- Frederica I., Addie A. Molie R (deceased), William F. < james Lawson, D. Edgar, Nannie E. and Perry M. Mortimer Lewis-Newport, IN
Mortimer Lewis, former Vermillion County Auditor and a resident of
Newport, died at his home this morning (September 25, 1965) following an
18-month illness. He was a lifelong resident of Vermillion County.
He was born in Helt Township on August 24, 1884, the son of James G. and
Nancy Jane Dugger Lewis.
He was a graduate of Dana High in 1902, Terre Haute Normal in 1912 and
Indiana State Teacher's College in 1915.
He was a principal of the high school in Monon, Montmorenci, and
Hillsdale. He taught one year at Colorado Agriculture College, Ft. Collins,
Colo.
He was married to Wilma Hambridge on October 6, 1920, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. W. G. (Martha) Keucher of Rankin, and
Miss Gladys Jane Lewis, Kenosha, Wisconsin; and four grandchildren.
He was auditor of Vermillion County from 1920-1924. He was appointed to the
State Board of Accounts as field examinator (sic) and served for 25 years
until his retirement 10 years ago.
He was a member of the Tennessee Valley Baptist Church, which his parents
helped to found.
Mr. Lewis was active in the Gideons Society and a member of the Masonic
Lodge and Eastern Star Chapter of Newport. He was a life member of Calnahan
Lodge, Knights of Pythias.
The body is at the Frist Funeral Home, Clinton, Indiana where
arrangements are incomplete.
