In 1911 Charles Steffani came to Miami, Florida from Washington D.C. to head the Miami Plant Introduction garden, which was an U.S. Department of Agriculture project. In 1920 Charles become the head of Chapman Field in Coconut Grove, another plant introduction garden and was named assistant agriculture agent for Dade County in 1926. Steffani was then named head agent in 1928. It was while working at Chapman Field that he invented the "Steffani" avocado, Charles also introduced different versions of limes, potatoes and other farm crops. Steffani was instrumental in setting up an experimental tropical farm in South Dade.

Steffani was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of County Agents and was presented with the Superior Service Award by National Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson in 1955. The Miami-Dade County Chamber of Commerce made him an honorary life member at the time of his retirement. Charles was a charter member and past president of the Homestead Rotary Club.

Charles Steffani was also a past vice-president of the Agriculture Extension Agents Association of Florida and held memberships in the Homestead Chamber of Commerce, Florida State Horticultural Society, and Epsom Sigma Phi (agricultural fraternity).

Both Charles & Bonnie are resting at Wood Lawn Cemetary, 8th st. Miami, FL. 305-445-5425, Sec 19, Lot 11, Graves 2&3.

Registered for the 1917-1918 WWI Draft, I doubt that he served, but should check it out.
