He was the son of William Langley Bevis and Jane Virginia Palmer.

William (uncle Billy) Bevis, oldest son of William Langley, and Jane Virginia Palmer, was born on December 24, 1818, near Laurens, SC. on the same night the Christmas carol "silent Night" was written. Among his neighbors were the Blakeley and Copeland families. Martha Emeline, The daughter of William and Margaret Copeland, became the wife of William Bevis in 1842. Martha's great grandfather, John Copeland, and her great great grandfather, John Blakely, were members of the American Revolutionary Army. John Copeland was born in Ireland on January 12, 1748, was married about 1773 and died September 7, 1826 in Laurens, SC. where his home still stands.
