Marriage of James Louis Rowland and Lucretia Florence Parton On the day of their wedding March 18, 1874 the groom rode from his home south of Scottsville to the home of the bride, seven miles up the creek. He was accompanied by a "Hardshell" Baptist Minister, the Rev. Joe Harmon, The creek was up and the minister hesitated at the crossing. He tried in vain to persuade the groom to proceed alone and return to the opposite bank with the bride. The ceremony to be carried out with the preacher on one side of the swollen creek and the couple on the other. Discovery of a boat ended the argument and the two tied their horses and crossed by boat. |
