 Includes NotesNotes for Thomas Hays:
Excerpt from Hayes Family Geneology:

Unfortunately, very little is known about Thomas Hayes, Sr., other than that he was born ca 1740 in Augusta County, VA, to George and Sarah (Dyer) Hayes. He lived and owned land in the area that is now known as Globe Township, Caldwell County, NC, within 2 miles of Jesse Boone (nephew of Daniel Boone). From the research of Kathryn (Hayes) Johnson, following the Revolutionary War, he and his half brother, William Edminsten, preceded their mother (Sarah (Dyer) Hayes Edminsten) and father (James Edminsten) to North Carolina.
In 1829, Thomas Hayes was living with his son John (Millie Medaris) Hayes and joined the Globe Baptist Church (re: Globe Baptist Church Minutes).
Since there is a sizeable age gap in the children, it is a possibility there was more than one marriage for the elder Thomas Hayes. One wife of elder Thomas Hayes was a daughter of Colbert Blair, but her given name is uncertain. Naomi Hayes who married Reuben Coffey, Jr., and Susan Hayes who married Cleveland Coffey, may also be his daughters (or grand daughters). Unfortunately, no concrete evidence of the connection(s) to these Hayes ladies has been found. Many Coffey-Hayes marriages have been documented since 1770.
It is also apparent that Thomas Hayes owned one slave. Her name was Elizabeth Hayes and she is mentioned in the Globe Baptist Church Minutes. She migrated with Benjamin and Nancy (Hayes) Coffey family to Grainger County, TN. Elizabeth is found in the 1860 Grainger County, TN, census (Elizabeth "Betty" Hayes, age 94, born VA) in the household of Nancy's son Thomas Coffey. Benjamin and Nancy (Hayes) Coffey are living next door.
