Uniting An Amazing Family’s Story By Andrea Maury’a Green Brown I became intrigued in who my ancestors were during the summer of 1994 and yearned to learn what their lives were like, what drove and motivated them; what brought them joy or sorrow; how did the institution of enslavement change and mold their lives; what opportunities were they given and did any of these events affect the person I am today. Upon reflection, I realized that the stock from which I descend is a mighty stock. This I gleaned from the character of my Uncle Charles Roy Green and his struggle to overcome, the pleasure that is revealed in his eyes at our yearly “family reunion” and the love he displays to each one of us. Although my journey has been long and arduous, I have countless days, months, and years ahead of me in grasping and chronicling this amazing family unit, yet I am unwavering in my dream of finally uniting this family’s story, leaving a legacy for the generations to come. We have been able to trace our family’s history back to mid-1800 Lousiana. There were limited amount of information in the very beginning, but it is our hope that we will come across more in the future. Our earliest ancestors known were James Green(e) and Mary Jane Ivory (Ivery). They both were born into slavery Mary January 1860 in North Carolina and James date of birth and origin is not yet known. Our family history focuses on the union of James Green(e) and Mary Jane Ivory (Ivery) and their seven known offspring. They are the roots from which our branches of the Green(e) family grow. Willie Joseph Green married Roberta Coleman c. 1904and they had six sons, Willie Joseph Jr., James Dell, Benjamin, Clarence, Ralph W., John Oliver and one daughter Lillie May. This is a work in progress and any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have. | |
