Surname:

According to the Lee County History Book, Giddings was "duly laid off in 1871... A Houston syndicate headed by Wm. Marsh Rice purchased the whole township, from whom settlers purchased their city lots... Later Rice had full control, and finally the Rice Institute of Houston owned and sold the lots." I find this Rice University connection quite interesting!

Rosemary Gregory, wrote in a short story, "Not One! Not Two! Not Three!" about her grandmother Sandifer, which she called "Fatmama". She recalls that Etta Cain lived in a pick stucco house that was built by her husband, Charlie (known by Rosemary as "Poppee"). Charlie was a carpenter and the house was located on a large corner lot in Wheeler, Texas. "The kitchen was located in the rear of the house and provided many meals for family gatherings for their three sons, one daughter, and all of the grandchildren. One item that was prepared on that high, counter was one that brings back very vivid memories. It was one of her specialties, a prune cake. Not just any prune cake, but one that was moist, sweet, and had a delicious filling that enhanced the flavor. A sample of this cake does bring back very pleasant memories.

FATMAMA'S PRUNE CAKE

1 1/2 cups sugar 1 ts. soda
1/2 ts. cinnamon 1/2 ts. allspice
1/4 ts. ginger 1/2 cup shortening
3 eggs 1 cup prune juice
1/2 cup buttermilk

There are no directions for making this batter, but just follow the basic cake recipe. What temperature to set the oven? It was not included. . .

FILLING

1 cup sugar 1 cup cream
1 egg lump of butter 1 cup chopped, cooked prunes

Cook until thick."

Well, Candace, I can see I will comment on each photo. Hope all this helps and is of interest to you. The black & white photo I sent of the three Ormond Sandifer children had to be taken right after World War II had ended as in this photo, my dad is in it and he did not get out of the Seabees (Navy) until the war ended & he is in this photo.

This picture was taken at the home of Charlie O. & Etta Anna Cain Sandifer in Wheeler, TX -- West side of their house. The door and little porch are gone now. Someone later (after home was sold) made that a solid wall - no door or anything. The house faced south.

Now, from left to right starting at "sort of" the back row:
Mary Yvonne Sandifer Peevy, Weldon Woodrow Sandifer, Ruby Lee Williams Sandifer (wife of Weldon), Robert Tyson "R.T." Peevy (husband of Yvonne), Etta Anna Cain Sandifer (Wife of Charlie O. Sandifer), Ormond Orceneth Sandifer, and his wife, Cornelia Watson Sandifer. Sitting on the ground are, in the dark dress, Cornelia Eloyce Sandifer Gallivan, Charles Bennett Sandifer (son and daughter of Ormond & Cornilia) and in the lap of Charles B. is Suzanne Sandifer, daughter of Weldon W. & Ruby Lee Williams Sandifer.

Candace, I hope all of this makes sense to you -- I'd be willing to bet that it does.
